MLB fans angry at Brian Cashman's decision to deny Luis Severino pitch for DR at 2023 WBC

Divisional Round - Cleveland Indians v New York Yankees - Game Four
Luis Severino #40 of the New York Yankees throws a pitch against the Cleveland Indians during the first inning in Game Four of the American League Divisional Series at Yankee Stadium on October 9, 2017 in the Bronx borough of New York City.

Baseball fans will not get to see New York Yankees pitcher Luis Severino pitching for the Dominican Republic during the World Baseball Championship. According to MLB Insider Hector Gomez, the decision was taken by Yankees GM Brian Cashman.

Many MLB fans were left angered by the decision and took to Twitter to air their frustrations.

Luis Severino's career has been interrupted by injuries since 2019. He underwent Tommy John surgery in 2020 and missed the entire season as well as most of the 2021 season. The Yankees management do not wish to risk further injury as they remain in the hunt for their first World Series title since 2009.

Most MLB fans were not happy with the news as they directed their ire at the Yankees GM.

"Of course loser cashman," one fan wrote.
"But Nestor Cortes can pitch for the US. This is hilarious.."
"He should also not allow Donaldson to be the starting third baseman"

Some believe this decision will lead to Severino moving on from the Yankees after this season.

"Feel bad for how crappy the Yankees have treated him (This is the right move though)"
"- Putting him on the 60 day IL when he thought he could return - This. Luis Severino is not going to be back after his contract expires at the end of the season…"
"Severino is not returning to the Yankees when he hits free agency"
"If Sevy leaves the Yankees this off season, this is probably why"
"Sevy gone after next season"

Some, on the other hand, backed the decision.

"Good call. What any good GM would do with injury prone players trying to play in some bs."
"Great decision, not worth it"
"Questioned this for a half second but it makes sense as to why Cashman won’t let him. We need Sevy to be healthy and dominate"
"Luis Severino should not want to pitch in the WBC with all the time he has missed over the past couple years"

Regardless, it is a huge blow to the Dominican Republic team one month before the start of the two-week-long tournament.

Last season was Luis Severino's best since his injury problems started in 2019. He returned to the team in September and in only his third start, he pitched seven no-hit innings and racked up seven strikeouts. He was, however, taken off after 94 pitches.

In 102 innings, the New York Yankees pitcher posted a 3.18 ERA and went 7-3 with 112 strikeouts. The Yankees exercised their option to keep Severino in the Bronx till the end of the season, worth $15 million. However, he is set to hit free agency once the season ends.

It will be interesting to see if Severino's MLB chapter with the Yankees will continue, or if it's time for a new one.
