MLB insider says White Sox signing Mike Clevinger was a bad idea after allegations: "They took a shot with Clevinger and that looks like a mistake" 

The Chicago White Sox added Mike Clevinger among a flurry of moves this offseason. It all resulted in a poor offseason grade from The Athletic. The outlet gave them an F for their offseason, which included a new manager and the signing of 2022 All-Star Andrew Benintendi.

MLB insider Jon Heyman agreed with the overall assessment. He said that signing Clevinger was a big mistake via Sox on 35th:

“I mean, I guess they took a shot with Clevinger and that looks like a mistake. That’s your big move … it’s probably hard to argue. But the offseason doesn’t mean that the season’s not going to be good, right? They lost Abreu, too, right? So, yeah, I would give them a D-minus. You know, that’s a bit harsh.”

Clevinger has come under investigation for domestic violence allegations. That can cost a pitcher everything, as Trevor Bauer recently discovered. Clevinger might soon be joining him depending on how things turn out with the case.

Either way, that appears to just be a wasted signing and lost money. The additions of Benintendi and Pedro Grifol as manager are nice, but they don't really offset what has proved to be a catastrophic move for Mike Clevinger so far.

Mike Clevinger remains under investigation

These allegations surfaced weeks ago, but Mike Clevinger is still under investigation. The Chicago White Sox and MLB released a statement via ESPN:

"Major League Baseball and the Chicago White Sox take any and all allegations very seriously, and the White Sox are completely supportive of the Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse policy shared by MLB and the MLBPA.

"MLB opened an investigation after learning of these allegations. The White Sox were not aware of the allegations or the investigation at the time of his signing. The White Sox will refrain from comment until MLB's investigative process has reached its conclusion."

Mike Clevinger may face serious punishment from the MLB

When that conclusion arrives is anyone's guess, but it certainly appears as if Clevinger is in for a punishment. This would mean that the White Sox won't have their prized offseason signing any time soon.
