New York Mets fans received some pretty unfortunate news on Saturday. The team announced that pitching prospect Matt Allan underwent UCL revision surgery in January, which will sideline him for the 2023 season. He previously underwent Tommy John Surgery in June 2021.Allan was selected in the third round of the 2019 MLB Draft. He was considered the Mets' top pitching prospect until Calvin Ziegler and Blade Tidwell passed him in August 2022.The Mets already have their starting rotation locked and loaded for this year. But Allan was seen as a key piece to their future.Anthony DiComo@AnthonyDiComoMets prospect Matt Allan, who underwent Tommy John surgery in May 2021, had a UCL revision in January. The 21-year-old hasn't pitched in a game since 2019 due to his surgeries and the cancelation of the 2020 minor league season.New York Mets fans feel for the kid. They want him to be healthy and have a legitimate shot at making the big league roster."What a tough break for this kid. It's likely that he'll never pitch in the big leagues. I'm rooting for him, but man that's tough" one fan tweeted.A-Aron@A_Aron1983@AnthonyDiComo What a tough break for this kid. It's likely that he'll never pitch in the big leagues. They're looking for Justin Verlander to continue his dominance on the mound after winning the Cy Young Award in 2022.Alongside Verlander, the rotation consists of Max Scherzer, Kodai Senga, Jose Quintana, and Carlos Carrasco. While they have a great rotation, their greatest asset is their rotational depth. David Peterson is considered their number six starter. He's coming off a season where he had career-highs in whiff rate (30.2%) and strikeout rate (27.8%).Another depth piece the Mets have is Tylor Megill, their 2022 Opening Day starter. He posted a 4-2 record, 5.13 ERA, and a 1.25 WHIP in 16 appearances last season. The New York Mets will have solid backup options if any of their starters get injured.
