Boston Red Sox pitcher Hunter Dobbins’ comment on the New York Yankees went viral during the two teams’ faceoff last weekend. The 25-year-old boldly noted that he’d rather retire than sign with the Bronx Bombers in his career.

Asked on the reason, Dobbins mentioned that it’s because his father is a diehard Red Sox fan, and given the two teams’ history, it was a natural response. The Boston Herald also quoted him, saying:

“He was actually drafted twice by the Yankees. Signed with them his last year and then he got traded over to the Diamondbacks.”

However, his comments came under scrutiny when a recent piece revealed that his father was never signed with the New York Yankees by MLB insider Joel Sherman. The writer noted that Yankees GM Brian Cashman never heard of his father ever joining the team.

A further investigation into the Yankees' amateur department revealed that Lance Dobbins' drafting was never recorded.

Dobbins' comments took the spotlight from the faceoff even before the rivalry game started. The Red Sox-Yankees rivalry has been going on for decades, and with the latest Hunter Dobbins jab at the pinstripes, it seems far from dying out.

Aaron Boone and Jazz Chisholm Jr. had an interesting take on his comments, with the latter even welcoming more “trash talk” in baseball. Chisholm even labeled Hunter Dobbins' take as "crazy" since it will shut down his opportunity to ever explore one of the biggest markets in the league.

The Yankees' third baseman, who is usually known for his critique of players and games, had a softer response to Dobbins’ comments.

“I think there should be more trash talk in baseball!!! Anyone agrees!?,” he said.

Yankees' manager Aaron Boone, on the other hand, had a different opinion. While he did not mind challenges and trash talk in the sport, he was just not interested in it. He said he had his fair share of trash talk back in the day, and now there’s no more need for it.
