The New York Yankees were poor on Saturday in a 4-3 loss to the Boston Red Sox. Among the couple of errors the Yankees made, the first came in the first inning.

Carlos Narváez grounded to Carlos Rodon's pitch, reaching to Anthony Volpe, who jumped and threw from the shortstop position. But Paul Goldschmidt couldn't handle it cleanly, resulting in Rob Refsnyder scoring an unearned first-inning run.

While the error was attributed to Volpe, Goldschmidt admitted his shortcoming on that play.

"I mean, for me, that was my fault. I tried to come off the bag and knock it down," Goldschmidt said.
"I knew what was happening — he was trying to make a great play — and I just didn't get far enough off the bag and kind of got caught. I was trying to knock it down, just didn’t do a good enough job.

"So I feel like that one was on me. He should have the freedom to throw that ball across the diamond like he did. Like I said, I came off the bag, I tried to get over there and knock it down, and just didn’t do a good enough job of getting all the way there and blocking it. That was my intention — I just didn’t do a good enough job of that."

Anthony Volpe's Yankees teammate, Jasson Dominguez, also blundered against the Red Sox

Another costly mistake on Saturday night came from Jasson Dominguez, who was caught wandering off second base when strike two was called on Trent Grisham in the seventh inning with Boston leading 4-2.

Dominguez explained that he thought there were two strikes already and that his teammate had struck out for the final out of the inning.

“For some reason, I thought he had two strikes,” Domínguez said. “I have nothing to say; no excuses. I made a mistake.”

Yankees manager Aaron Boone revealed that Domínguez felt “terrible” about his mistake.

“It’s probably something that won’t ever happen to him again.”

If not for those two costly mistakes, the result could have been different for the Yankees, who have gone 5-5 in their last 10 games. It was their second straight loss against the Red Sox, with the Tampa Bay Rays and the Toronto Blue Jays now only 4.5 games behind the Yankees for the AL East division lead.
