MLB Twitter reacts to stat that Trea Turner hit more home runs in WBC than he has for Phillies: "The pitching in WBC doesn’t even compare"

When Trea Turner inked a massive 11-year deal worth $300 million with the Philadelphia Phillies this past offseason, many thought that the former Rookie of the Year Award winner would make a real difference.

Throughout his career, Turner has led the league in runs, hits, stolen bases and batting average. He has also appeared in more at-bats over the past two seasons than anyone else.

However, as soon as the season got underway, Trea Turner seemed to lose his touch. Turner is hitting .257 and has not registered an RBI in his past 30 at-bats. Recently, ESPN shared a resounding stat that Turner hit more home runs and RBIs in six games for Team USA at March's World Baseball Classic than he has in 45 games for the Phillies this season.

Trea Turner was among a plethora of American players, including Los Angeles Angels star Mike Trout, who decided to represent their country for the first time in the tournament.

Despite the staggering nature of the statistic, many fans online were quick to point out that Team USA was up against some fairly amateur teams, including Great Britain, whose roster did not include any pro players.

Nevertheless, the statistic highlights how Trea Turner has not been as influential as many expected he'd be.

After the Phillies made it to their first World Series since 2011 last season, many fans got a taste for victory that had been sorely lacking in previous seasons. When Turner hit the free market at the end of last season, the Phillies knew he is exactly what their fans would want.

Now seven games behind the Atlanta Braves in the NL East division, it does not look like the Phillies will be able to replicate their success from last season.

Trea Turner has plenty of time to turn the ship around

Now that Bryce Harper has completed the fastest recovery ever from Tommy John surgery, the Philadelphia Phillies are showing more promise than they were before. For Turner, it is wholly possible that the early-season yips will give way to hitting that is more akin to his former self.

Phillies fans will need him if they are ever going to improve and be able to compete at the level that so thoroughly delighted fans during their fantastic run last season.
