Where could Rafael Ortega end up? Top 3 landing spots for recently released Venezuelan star

Rafael Ortega's brief stint with the New York Yankees has come to an end after being granted his release from the club

With the MLB season set to begin tomorrow, veteran outfielder Rafael Ortega will be back to square one following his release from the New York Yankees. While it appeared that Ortega would have a depth role with the Bronx Bombers, Ortega requested a release from his minor league with the Yankees, which the club honored.

Ortega was in competition with Willie Calhoun and Estevan Florial for a bench spot with New York. However, following Calhoun's reassignment to the minor league camp, it appeared set. While the official announcement between Ortega and Florial was not made, they were both set to return to New York.

Manager Aaron Boone stated that the final roster decision had not been finalized, but now in the wake of Ortega's release, it appears that Florial ultimately won the bench role.

Now at 32 years old, Rafael Ortega may be an intriguing depth piece for teams as the season is slated to begin tomorrow. Here is a look at three teams who may look to add Ortega in free agency.

A return to the Colorado Rockies could be ideal for Rafael Ortega

Entering the 2023 campaign, the Colorado Rockies appear destined for a rough season. While the club is set to debut some of its top prospects, including Ezequiel Tovar, its outfield depth leaves something to be desired.

Currently, the Rockies' outfield depth consists of aging veterans such as Charlie Blackmon and Kris Bryant (if they decide to do so), or players coming off of injuries such as Randal Grichuk. While Ortega would more than likely be a bench option, the Rockies may be tempted to give their veterans additional time off throughout the 162-game regular season.

The Oakland Athletics

It's clear to see what the Oakland Athletics' plan is: trade away any players of value to gain future pieces. This is where Ortega could come into the picture for the A's. Not only would his contract be relatively cheap, but he could also provide the club with a backup option if they elect to trade Ramon Laureano or Seth Brown.

If Ortega is able to perform well enough for the club, the A's could also potentially trade to a contender for a younger player. While the return in a trade would likely be small, it's worth it for Oakland to add any future pieces.

The Texas Rangers could use the additional outfield depth

As the Texas Rangers continue to pursue their first-ever franchise World Series title, they could look to add additional depth to their questionable outfield. Adolis Garcia and Robbie Grossman are the only outfielders on the roster who have proven themselves to be consistent contributors at the MLB level.

Enter Rafael Ortega, who could at least provide the team with additional options in the outfield. He could potentially battle Bubba Thompson, Travis Jankowski or Josh Smith for a larger role off the bench. Given the Rangers' "all-or-nothing" approach in recent years, Ortega may be worth taking a flier on.
