Derrion Reid attended Grovetown High School where he averaged 9.8 points and 3.4 rebounds as a sophomore. This was also the season when the player won the Class 6A state championship before Reid moved to Prolific Prep in Napa, California. As a senior, the player was named to the 2024 McDonald's All-American Boys Game squad. He is a 2024 McDonald's All-American and is one of three McDonald's All-Americans on Alabama's squad.

Reid is ranked as the No. 11 overall recruit by ESPN, On3. In addition to this, he is ranked No. 15 by 247Sports in the class of 2024. The college basketball player’s name was enlisted to the Naismith All-American Honorable Mention Team. He is also the fourth-highest-rated recruit in the history of the program, as per 247Sports, and is only behind players like Collin Sexton, Brandon Miller, and JD Davison. The player concluded his career in high school at Prolific Prep averaging 17.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game. He also posted six games with 20 points or more on the EYBL circuit. He began his college football career after providing his commitment to Alabama. Reid had offers to play college basketball for teams like Georgia and Georgia State. In January 2024, he signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Crimson Tide.
