VCU Rams is the intercollegiate men's basketball team that represents Virginia Commonwealth University. The VCU men's basketball program was established in 1968, with Benny Dees as the first head coach of the team. Benny Dees coached the VCU Rams men's basketball team for two seasons from 1968-1970. Throughout its history, the Rams have appeared in 19 NCAA tournaments, as of December 2024.

In 2010, the VCU Rams men's basketball team went undefeated and became the champions of the College Basketball Invitational (CBI). Since the 2012-2013 season, the VCU Rams men's basketball team has been competing in the Atlantic 10 Conference. Previously, they competed in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA).

VCU Basketball Head Coach 2024

Ryan Odom is the head coach of the VCU Rams men's basketball team, as of December 2024. Prior to this role, he served as the head coach of the Utah State Aggies from 2021 to 2023, the UMBC Retrievers men's basketball team from 2016 to 2021, and the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears basketball team from 2015 to 2016.

Ryan began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at South Florida. He then worked as an assistant coach and associate head coach at several schools throughout his career. Before his coaching career, Ryan was a basketball player at Hampden-Sydney from 1992 to 1996. He played the position of point guard for the team and then graduated from the college with a degree in economics in 1996.

One notable coach, Sonny Smith, held the record for the longest tenure as head coach, serving from 1989 to 1998 for a total of nine seasons. VCU Men's Basketball Assistant Coach

As of December 2024, the assistant coaches for the VCU Rams men's basketball team are Matt Henry, Bryce Crawford, and Darius Theus.

Matt Henry joined the VCU staff as an assistant coach in April of 2023. Prior to that, he was an assistant coach at Utah State from 2021 to 2023. Henry got his start in coaching as an assistant at Trinity University in Texas and has since served as an assistant for several basketball programs.

Bryce Crawford also joined the VCU Men's Basketball staff in April of 2023. Before coming to VCU, he was the assistant coach for two seasons at Utah State.

Darius Theus joined the VCU Rams as an assistant coach in April 2023. He worked at VCU previously as the director of player development from 2018 to 2022. During the 2022-23 season, Theus joined the Sienna coaching staff as an assistant coach.
