3 Indians who scored a century and picked up 4 wickets in the same ODI

Australia v India - 2011 ICC World Cup Quarter-Final

All-rounders are the ones every team needs for the right balance of the team. Some are genuine all-rounders while some are batting and bowling all-rounders. Players like Andrew Flintoff, Jacques Kallis, Lance Klusener and Dwayne Bravo fall in the first category while others like Daniel Vettori, Mohammad Hafeez, Shaun Pollock and Kapil Dev belong to the second category.

Apart from them, what most teams look for is batsmen who can bowl a bit and bowlers who can bat a bit. Such batsmen give the captain more options on the field without compromising the quality of batsmanship and such bowlers provide the rearguard action when the batsmen fail. The likes of Yuvraj Singh, Shoaib Mallik, Shane Warne, Stuart Broad and R Ashwin belong to this category.

Here we look at three Indian players who scored a hundred and picked 4 wickets in the same match:

Sachin Tendulkar (141 and 4/38)

Sachin Tendulkar, with all those batting records to his name, is quite an underrated bowler. He has 154 wickets to his name, which includes 6 four-wicket hauls. He had many variations up his sleeves as well. He happened to be the first Indian to pick 4 wickets and score a century in the same ODI.

Sachin scored a blistering 141 off 128 balls against Australia in the Wills International Cup quarter-finals in 1998. His innings included 13 fours and 3 sixes and he contributed more than 45% of the team total.

After winning the toss, Australia put India to bat and like in most other matches in the 90s, Sachin was the lone warrior for India. He was ably supported by Ajay Jadeja, who scored a brisk 71 off 65 balls.

Chasing a target of 308, Australia got off to a flying start and were on course for a win until Tendulkar spun magic with the ball. He picked up the prized wicket of Steve Waugh, triggering a mini-collapse and India clinched the match by 44 runs. Sachin picked 4 wickets for 38 runs at an economy of 4.15.

Sourav Ganguly (130* and 4/21)

The former India skipper, Ganguly was a more than handy medium pacer and sometimes used to bowl his full quota of overs, especially when the wicket was suitable for seamers. He had 100 wickets to his name with a best of 5/16.

Ganguly achieved this feat against Sri Lanka in 1999 at Nagpur. India were sent in to bat by Sri Lanka and Ganguly along with Dravid made the Lankans regret the decision. Both of them stitched a 236 run partnership, with Ganguly scoring 130 off 160 balls and Dravid hitting 116 of 118 balls. India finished with 287/4.

Chasing 288, Sri Lanka were in the game till Ganguly came in to bowl. Captain Ranatunga was trapped in front by Ganguly, which then led to a collapse and India won the game convincingly by 80 runs.

Ganguly finished with figures 4/21 from his 4 overs and was rightfully adjudged the Man of the Match.

Yuvraj Singh (118 and 4/28)

The Player of the Tournament in India's victorious campaign in the 2011 World Cup, Yuvraj was used quite regularly at home by Dhoni as a bowler. He played as the fifth bowler in the 2011 World Cup and was a regular wicket-taker in the tournament. He has 111 ODI wickets to his name with 3 four-fers.

He is the third and the last Indian till date to achieve the rare feat of scoring a century and picking up 4 wickets in the same match. He did it against England at Indore in 2008 when he scored 118 off 122 balls. His innings included 15 fours and 2 huge sixes. His innings, accompanied by Yusuf Pathan's late blitz set England a target of 293.

Yuvraj was then surprisingly used ahead of lead spinner Harbhajan, owing to the number of right-handers in the English line up. The move worked wonders and Yuvraj picked the wickets of Matt Prior, Kevin Pietersen, Owais Shah and Andrew Flintoff, destroying the English middle order.

He finished with figures of 4/28 from his 10 overs at an economy of 2.8 in a match where the required rate was almost six. India won the game comfortably by 54 runs.
