The Sri Lankan cricket team is currently going through a tough rebuilding phase. Their performance in the recently concluded World Cup has been below par, considering their prolific record at the ICC events.

The island nation have been able to reach two successive World Cup finals (2007& 2011) led by Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara respectively. Unfortunately, they were crushed by the invincible Australian team in the former edition and by the Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led Indian team in the latter edition of the tournament.

#1 New Zealand (2015 & 2019)

Australia v New Zealand - 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup: Final

New Zealand has been an incredible team in the limited-overs format of the game, primarily because of its impactful all-rounders. The Kiwis have always punched above their weight in the World Cup and have frequently surprised everyone with their enterprising brand of cricket. The Black Caps made it to the finals in the last two editions of the tournament, ending up on the losing side in both. The final against England in the 2019 edition of the tournament was the perhaps the closest final in the history of cricket.

Moreover, New Zealand has participated in all the 12 editions of the World Cup, making it to the semifinals on eight occasions (1975, 1979, 1992, 1999, 2007, 2011, 2015, 2019), which is a joint world record along with the Kangaroos.
