During this spell, he dismissed smith for a golden duck the ball after he dismissed Michael Clarke. The South Africans eventually won by 237 runs and levelled the series.

The credit for Steve Smith's first-ever duck in Test cricket goes to the English fast bowler Chris Tremlett. He achieved this feat in 2013 during Australia's 5–0 Ashes victory over England. During the first Test, Australia had a lead of 159 runs after the first innings. The Australian batsmen were trying to score fast runs, and Steve Smith was dismissed for a duck in the same attempt. They ended up thrashing England by 338 runs with Mitchell Johnson ending the match with eight wickets and more than a hundred runs.
