Ashes 4th Test, Day 3, Stats: Alastair Cook breaks numerous records as England end the day on top 

The England cricket team continued from where they left off on day 2 of the fourth Ashes Test and batted throughout the third day to put themselves on top.

Just when doubts were raised about his place on the side, former captain Alastair Cook produced one of his best ever Test innings. He ended the day with 244 runs to his name, almost half the runs of England's total.

He rolled back the clock and produced a vintage innings with the bat, producing some magnificent shots along the way. The Australian bowlers threw everything they had at him but had no answer to his shot-making.

He kept losing partners at the other end and at one point, it looked like he might not reach his double hundred. However, Stuart Broad put on a superb show with the bat and scored a much-needed half-century.

England ended the day with 491 runs on the board for the loss of nine wickets and lead Australia by 164 runs.

At long last, England has a stranglehold on Australia in the Ashes. It has come a little too late but they will surely have regained some lost pride.

1 - For the first time in his 151 Test match career, Alastair Cook featured in a 10th wicket partnership.

2 - Alastair Cook is only the 2nd England player with multiple Test double centuries in a calendar year. Wally Hammond scored two each in 1928, 1933 and 1936

2 - Cook is 2nd on the list, along with Brian Lara for the most number of double centuries scored in Australia.

2 - Stuart Broad's 56 is the 2nd highest individual score by a No.10 against Australia in the last 30 years. Dale Steyn scored 76 in the 2008 MCG Test.

4 - Alastair Cook joins Mahela Jayawardene as the only players to have batted for over 10 hours on 4 occasions in Test cricket.

4 - This is the fourth time Pat Cummins has dismissed Joe Root in this series. All dismissals have come in the first innings.

5 - Cook has scored 5 double centuries now and is 2nd on the all-time list for most double centuries scored by an English batsman.

6 - Alastair Cook went from 9th highest run-scorer in Tests to 6th in 24 hours, passing Jayawardene, Chanderpaul & Lara.

42 - since Jan 2016, Root has gone past 50 more than anyone else across formats - 42 times - but converted only nine of those to three-figures.

113 - Cook has played in all 113 Tests of Stuart Broad. However, this is only the second instance of them batting together in a Test.

11956 - The number of runs Cook has scored in his Test career so far. He is 6th on the all-time list, one behind Kumar Sangakkara.

56 - Broad's knock of 56 was the best ever by a no. 10 batsman in an Ashes Test. The previous best was Tich Freeman in 1924-25.
