Smith and Rogers enjoyed the full batting pitch

Australia finished Day 1 of the second Ashes Test at 337 for 1. Both Chris Rogers and Steven Smith scored centuries to help the visitors post a commendable score at the close of day’s play at Lord’s cricket ground.

After winning the toss, Michael Clarke immediately decided to bat first without any hesitation in spite of the overcast conditions. The pitch didn’t seem to have anything in it for the bowlers, and Clarke read that aspect perfectly.

After David Warner’s dismissal for 38, Rogers and Smith ensured the scoreboard ticked over at a good rate. They were not out on 158 and 129 respectively, when the umpire called stumps.

England were given no chances on a sluggish pitch that offered their bowlers some assistance. James Anderson and Stuart Broad struggled throughout the day as the Australian pair found their rhythm very early.

The only batsman who was out was Warner, as he went to attack Moeen Ali off a high-pitched delivery, playing a ball straight to cover fielder. He made 38 off just 42 deliveries.

Australia will resume Day 2 with the intention of posting a mammoth total in the first innings. The home team will look to find early breakthroughs to hold back the kangaroos.
