The much-awaited biopic has finally arrived

The day has finally come. MS Dhoni The Untold Story is set to be released in 4500 screens across 60 Countries, which is the widest release for an Indian movie.

As fans around the world gear up for the much-awaited biopic on India’s most successful captain, the inner critic in us is bound to wonder about how the movie would perform at the box office and how much money it would make. The success the film receives is based on the amount it collects in the box office, and as MS Dhoni is universally loved, fans would be hoping for a huge box office collection.

With cricket being the most beloved sport in our country, there have been numerous movies based which have revolved around the game.

#8 Azhar (2016)

As the title says, Azhar was a movie based the life of India’s former captain Mohammad Azharuddin. The film follows the match fixing controversies which he was involved in and his fight for innocence. Azhar was accused of match fixing in the year 2000 with a London-based bookie. The scandal led to him being banned for life by the BCCI. After a successful fight for innocence, Azhar was cleared of all charges in the year 2012.

The movie received a lukewarm response from the audience and fans expected a lot more from it.

Box Office collection: Rs. 53.5 crore.

#7 Ferrari Ki Sawaari (2012)

Produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, who was responsible for the successful Munnabhai franchise, Ferrari Ki Sawaari is a light-hearted sports drama movie. The movie follows a little boy who dreams of going to Lords Cricket Ground to meet and play with hid idol Sachin Tendulkar. As his family cannot afford the trip, his father steals Sachin Tendulkar’s red Ferrari for one day to fulfill his son’s dream.

The movie was received well by critics but did not make much of an impact on the general movie going audience and cricket fans.

Box Office collection: Rs 44 crore.

#6 Patiala House (2011)

Directed by Nikhil Advani who was the man behind the success of Kal Ho Na Ho, Patiala House was a movie about a father and son relationship. Featuring Akshay Kumar and Rishi Kapoor, the film follows Gattu, who is living the life chosen by his cricket-hating father. As Gattu loves the game, when he gets a shot to play for an English team, he is torn between his father's orders and his own passion.

The movie received mixed reviews, and it was deemed “too predictable” by many critics.

Box Office collection: Rs. 88 crore.

#5 Victory (2009)

The movie Victory is a typical rag to riches story. Starring Harman Baweja, the film follows the story of a father's dream to see his son become a big name in the sport of cricket. It’s a boy's dream run in the most popular sport in the country. It was directed by Ajit Pal Mangat.

The movie received bad reviews and was a huge flop at the box office as well.

#4 Dil Bole Hadippa (2009)

Starring Ranji Mukherjee and Shahid Kapoor, this movie was a copy of the Hollywood hit “She’s the man.” Directed by Anurag Singh, the film follows a Punjabi girl who is crazy about cricket and dreams of playing in the men’s Cricket World Cup. She disguises herself as a man and joins the team, but soon falls in love with the coach of the team.

The movie did not do too well at the box office and received average reviews from critics as well.

#3 Jannat (2006)

Starring Emraan Hashmi and directed by Kunal Deshmukh, Jannat is an all about match fixing and the bookies involved in it. The movie follows a gambler who turns into a cricket bookie banking on his sixth sense. His urge to make quick money pushes him into match fixing, and he loses control of his life and love.

The movie did reasonably well, and its success prompted the makers to create a sequel which was released in 2012.

#2 Iqbal (2005)

One of the most successful cricket movies of all time, Iqbal follows the story of a deaf and dumb boy from a poor background who dreams of playing for the Indian cricket team. He faces various obstacles along the way and overcomes them to achieve his dream with the help of his coach. Filled with power packed performances by Shreyas Talpade and Naseeruddin Shah, this movie etched its way into our hearts.

Iqbal was a huge box office success and received excellent reviews from critics as well.

#1 Lagaan (2001)

Arguably the most successful Indian movie of the 21st century, Lagaan was India’s entry to the Oscars as it received a nomination in the category of “Best Foreign Language Feature.” The movie follows a group of Champaner villagers led by a feisty young man who challenges the British to a game of cricket to get their land tax waived. Their biggest hurdle was that no one knew how to play the game. Directed by Ashutosh Gwarikar and starring Aamir Khan, the movie has become one of the all-time classics of Indian cinema.

Lagaan received immense success at the box office and was lauded by critics all around the world.

Box Office collection: Rs. 71 crore.
