5 instances when cricket teams were bowled out for under 10 runs

Bowled out
Getting bowled out below 100 is an embarrassing moment for most cricket teams

Scoring runs in a match might be a challenge for some teams. There have been instances when teams have managed to score more than 1000 runs, when Victoria scored 1107 against a humiliated New South Wales.

They managed to score more than 1000 runs once again when they scored 1059 runs against Tasmania in a first class match. The highest total in an ICC certified match was when Sri Lanka scored a magnificent 952 against India in a Test match held in 1997.

Sri Lanka also hold the highest total, where they scored 443 runs against a miserable Netherlands side, showing how easy it can be to score when the team is in full form.

But there have been instances when teams have been bowled out for humiliating totals, showing how ruthless cricket can be. New Zealand hold the record for the worst score in an ICC certified test match when they scored a lowly 26 runs against England in 1955.

The lowest score in an ODI was when Zimbabwe scored a poor 35 runs against Sri Lanka in 2004. But, some teams have found it tough to score more than even that much runs in an innings, with them not even scoring 10 runs.

So below are the 5 instances when cricket teams were bowled out for under 10 runs:

5) China vs Afghanistan (China all out for 9)

China played Afghanistan in a U-16 match in the Asian Cricket Council’s U-16 Challenge Cup 2012. Afghanistan scored a mighty 349 runs for the Chinese to chase, but the Chinese faltered so badly that they would rather stop playing the sport completely.

The batsmen lasted for just 8.4 overs, scoring nine runs in the process. What’s surprising is that despite surviving 8.4 overs, they couldn’t breach the 10-run barrier, showing how shambolic their batting was.

The captain of the Chinese team, Gaofeng Hu made the highest runs for the whole Chinese team, when he scored a mighty two runs. Afghanistan’s fast bowler Naveen-ul-haq sent two batsmen in the treatment room after the two batsmen were retired hurt.

4) The B’s vs All England (The B’s all out for 6)

The B’s played the All England team for a First-Class match in the year 1810. What’s iconic about this match is that the B’s scored a paltry six runs, with only three players scoring runs. Batsman J Wells scored the highest runs for the team as he scored an impressive four runs, with S Bridger and J Lawrell scoring one run each.

Tail ender EH Budd failed to show up for the match with the official records stating that he was absent hurt. He probably wanted to run away from the shame to bat for a team that only managed to score six runs! Bowler Hammond took six wickets of the total possible of nine batsmen with Budd running away.

3) Wirral vs Haslington (Wirral all out for 3)

In more recent times, the Wirral team became viral for their incredible performances that saw them score three runs against Haslington in the Cheshire League Division Three fixture. At one point of time, the Wirral team were down six wickets with no score to show for, only when the eleventh batsman scored one run to open his innings. The other two runs came as leg byes.

This performance was dubbed as a ‘freak performance’ as only one player in the whole team managed to score a solitary run. The Wirral team’s twitter handle tweeted “1st XI lost by 105 runs today... Sadly the opposition only scored 108!”

Wirral’s skipper Pete Clewes said: “It was just a freak performance.” He added: ““We bowled well. We fielded well. We bowled them out for 108, and we were feeling perfectly confident when we went into bat, but for some reason we all just batted atrociously. It was extraordinary.”

He added: “Everyone just panicked as the wickets fell. It just got worse and worse,” added the 43-year-old computer programmer from Chester.”

Such was the performance of the young lads that celebrities and well known Arsenal supported Piers Morgan was asked whether he would like to play, to which he replied: "Sorry lads, my form's too good." That’ some funny banter by the Englishman!

2) Christ Church vs Bapchild (Bapchild all out for 0)

Chirst Church played Bapchild in a six-a-side indoor Championship match held at Canterbury, where they managed to get the entire Bapchild team bowled out for 0. They managed to secure a win in just 20 balls, not giving a single extra to lift the Bapchild team from their misery.

Christ Church spinner Mike Rose said after the match: “We all couldn’t really believe it to be honest, bowling a team out for 0, especially indoors as all they needed to do was hit a wall to get one run.” The spinner wasn’t even required to bowl; such was the condition of the team.

The Christ Church team won the match comprehensively, as they secured the victory by 120 runs and losing just one wicket!

1) Glastonbury vs Langport (Langport all out for nought)

Langport made history when they got all out for a duck in the year 1913. Not a single player managed to score a single run and what’s funny is that the Langport team were so unfortunate that they couldn’t even muster an extra!

Langport’s incredible batting performances would have been forgotten had it not been for the efforts of the team’s archivist Toby Strang. About the famous performance, he said: “The scorecard from the day has been in the clubhouse for years and we thought it was about time it was recognised by Wisden [Cricketers' Almanack] or Guinness World Records.”

He added: “How can a team be out for zero? We don't know the weather or conditions that day but it beggars belief the team didn't even score an extra.” The match was dubbed to be an ‘amazing sensation’ for the supporters.

Although Langport bowled well, getting the entire Glastonbury bowled out for a total of 80 runs, Langport’s incredible batting performance that day would make sure that the club goes down in history for being the first team to get bowled out for 0!
