Former India cricketer Venugopal Rao has put his weight behind former India captain MS Dhoni, to not only play the 2020 T20 World Cup but also the 2023 ODI World Cup scheduled in India.

Rao, who retired in 2019 after representing India in 16 ODIs apart from being an IPL winner in 2009 with now-defunct Deccan Chargers, praised the Indian captain with whom he shared the dressing room in his early days.

Rao explained how Dhoni was by far the best Indian captain and wicketkeeper, and that he had the ability to read tough situations better than anyone around.

"Definitely. He should also play the 50-over World Cup which will happen in India in 2023. He is a valuable player for any ICC tournament. I know he didn’t play after the World Cup semifinal last year but it is not difficult for him to come back. He is Dhoni. He knows how to handle these things. A guy who has all the ICC trophies. Nobody else is close to him as a captain or a wicketkeeper-batsman."
