India trump England by 86 runs in the U-19 tri-series

Sarfaraz Khan hit a brilliant 66-ball 84 in India U-19’s victory over England U-19

India U-19 displayed a superb all-round performance, to defeat England U-19 by 86 runs in the 1st match of the tri-nation U-19 tournament that began today in Sri Lanka. Indian Premier League (IPL) hero Sarfaraz Khan starred for India making 84 off 66 balls, as the match was curtailed to 34-overs per side due to rain.

Anmolpreet Singh also contributed with a 41-ball 56 and lower order contributions from Ricky Bhui, Ishan Kishan and Mahipal Lomror led India U-19 to a commanding total of 254/7 in their 34-overs.

Hugh Bernard struck early for the English side when he got Himanshu Rana caught behind by wicket-keeper Tom Moores in the third over. India had barely recovered from that when just two balls later Ben Green trapped Rishabh Pant leg-before to reduce India U-19 to 23/2.

But after that, Sarfaraz and Anmolpreet steadied the Indian ship, and they slowly but steadily built up the Indian innings and shared a magnificent 126-run stand for the third wicket.

Anmolpreet fell to Bernard when he was caught by Green, with the India U-19 score at 149 in the 20th over. Thereafter Bhui, Kishan and Lomror batted sensibly and despite English side picking up wickets at regular intervals guided the Indian innings to a demanding total of 254.

Ben Green grabbed 3 wickets for England U-19 while Hugh Bernard pocketed 2.

Further rain, however, at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, meant that England U-19 were set a target of 246 runs from 29 overs, which they fell short of by 86 runs.

In reply, the England U-19 batsmen never looked in the hunt as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals.

Despite Dan Lawrence’s quickfire 55 off just 46 balls, and some cameos down the order by George Bartlett and Ben Green, Mahipal Lomror’s 4 wickets in 5 overs proved out to be too much for the English side as they capitulated to 159/9 in their designated 29 overs.

Lomror picked up 4 wickets in quick succession as he dismissed Brad Taylor, Jared Warner, and Mason Crane and broke the back of the English lower-order. He had also sent off George Barlett who had looked threatening with his 19-ball 21 that included 4 boundaries.

The big wicket of Lawrence was picked up by Shubham Mavi, in the sixteenth over and that pretty much sealed the deal for India U-19.

Kanishk Seth and Mayank Dagar also chipped in with 2 wickets a piece.
