Scenario 2: South Africa wins the series

South Africa v Sri Lanka - 2nd Test
South Africa v Sri Lanka - 2nd Test

Scoreline: 0-1

If South Africa win the series by a 1-0 margin, they will trump India to the top-ranked Test team. Both the teams will have 112 rating points. But the Proteas will be better off by a few decimal points.

Scoreline 0-2:

South Africa will finish the series with 114 rating points if they manage to win 0-2 against a very strong home-side. On the other hand, India will be at the second position with 110 points.

Scoreline 0-3:

While this seems like an improbable scenario, if South Africa manage to whitewash India, they will have 115 points to their tally. India, on the other hand, will lose another point and finish at 109. However, they'll still have a hold on the second rank as they will have marginally better rating points compared to New Zealand.

Scoreline 1-2:

If South Africa clinch the series 2-1, they will hold the top position in the rankings table. Both the teams will have 112 rating points each. South Africa will be better placed in the points table though, courtesy a marginal difference in the decimal points.

Scenario 3: Series drawn at 1-1

In this case, there will be no change in the current rankings. India will finish with 114 rating points while South Africa will continue at the third position with 109 rating points.
