Mary Kom raises her first issue in the Rajya Sabha in just 3 months, Sachin Tendulkar criticised

Mary Kom during the monsoon session in the Parliament

India's star boxer Mary Kom has raised her first issue in the Rajya Sabha within three months of being nominated whereas it took almost 3 years for Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar to just speak up. Unlike his batting abilities Sachin does not have a good record when it comes to raising issues in the parliament as he hardly attends the sessions.

Till date, the Master Blaster has only asked a question about the Mumbai metro from the Ministry of Railways. On the other hand, Mary Kom raised an issue as she believes that more funds should be provided to the athletes representing the country in marquee events.

The boxer asked, “Sir, what plans does the government have to increase the budget and promote Olympic sports?”

Mary Kom said that there was the lack of management during the events and the players had to face a lot of difficulties regarding food and facilities. The food not being served at the right time was also a matter of concern.

"Sir, the diet that was given to us never got served at the right time. During the training session, diet was not given on time. I just wanted to share that idea and know from the minister how much budgetary support could be given for the promotion of Olympic games."

In answer to that, Sports Minister Vijay Goel told, "We are giving customised training to players. Foreign coaches are being provided to those who need them. Good diet is being provided"

The sports minister also said that funds are now coming under the corporate social responsibility schemes taken to promote sport along with the budgetary allocations.

Samajwadi party Leader Naresh Agarwal has also demanded Tendulkar's resignation for not being serious enough to attend the parliamentary meetings following Mary Kom's intervention. Tendulkar has attended the session for only a day whereas Mary Kom has attended the session for six days.

Mary Kom's questions were backed and supported by several other MP's.

"It is unfortunate. If they do not have time, they should resign and make space for others. A nominated member is supposed to contribute on matters of public interest from their expertise and experience." Naresh Agarwal said during the session.

In August 2014 when Tendulkar's message to remain absent during the session was read out, many of the members opposed Tendulkar's decision of staying back and he was criticized for "disrespected to the house". Not only Tendulkar, Bollywood actress Rekha has been also criticized for the same.
