Virat Kohli becomes fastest to 9,000 international runs as captain
Every time Virat Kohli steps on to the field, there seems to be some or the other record waiting for him. In the second ODI in Nagpur, the Indian skipper struck a fighting 116, his 40th ODI ton; he was the major contributor in India’s total of 250. It was also Kohli’s 65th international hundred.
During his 120-ball knock, the 30-year-old also became the fastest to 9,000 international runs as captain. He got to the landmark in 159 innings, beating Ricky Ponting’s record of 203 innings.
Kohli walked in during the very first over, and batted beautifully. On what was a tricky pitch where the ball was not quite coming on to the bat, he was the lone warrior for India - the next best score was 46 by Vijay Shankar, and no one apart from the Kohli and Shankar scored in excess of 25.
Uncertainty over Shakib Al Hasan’s participation for the upcoming IPL
IPL 2019 is right around the corner, and the cricket world is abuzz with excitement. A few teams have started preparing already, and a few camps are underway as well.
There is some bad news for the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) fans though, as one of their star overseas players might not be available for the upcoming season. Shakib Al Hasan has been on the sidelines ever since he injured his finger in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) earlier this year; he has missed all the matches of the New Zealand tour so far, and is in doubt for the rest of it as well.
Nazmul Hasan, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president, has said that the star all-rounder will have to obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the board to participate in the IPL. He said that only if the doctors and physios deem Shakib fully fit, can he play the IPL. He also added that Bangladesh will not want to risk their big player.
“If he is not fully OK then how will he play the IPL? It can’t be that he is only unfit for our national team but fit for the IPL. If he is fully OK and the doctors concur only then he will be able to play in the IPL,” the BCB president was quoted saying.
India could lose out on hosting 2021 World T20 and 2023 World Cup

The BCCI is certainly one of the biggest and most powerful boards in world cricket. And they have a pretty busy four years coming up as they get set to host a couple of big ICC tournaments.
India are scheduled to host the 2021 World T20 (which has replaced the ICC Champions Trophy) and the 2023 World Cup.
However, that can only happen if the tax dispute with the ICC is cleared. The general trend is that the ICC gets tax exemption from the member nations that host the tournaments. However, the Indian government denied the tax exemption back in 2016 when India hosted the World T20. Hence, the ICC has demanded a compensation of approximately INR 160 crore (USD 23 million dollars) in return.
Recent reports from the media suggest that India are in danger of losing out on the chance to host the two big showpiece events. “If ICC goes ahead with 2021 T20 and 2023 World Cup in India, it may have to cough up more than Rs. 150 crore in taxes only,” an ICC official was quoted saying.
However, a BCCI office bearer said that they have informed the ICC to wait until the completion of the Lok Sabha elections before continuing the talk of the tax exemption.
Time running out for Aaron Finch: Shane Warne
Australia’s limited-overs captain has been in woeful form in the last few months. Aaron Finch hasn’t scored a half-century for Australia in his last 20 white-ball innings. In fact, in his last 17 innings, he has gone past the score of 15 just twice.
Former Australian captain Ian Chappell heavily criticised Finch for his dismal show. And now another Australian legend, Shane Warne, has come down hard on Finch.
Warne feels that the skipper has just a couple more innings to return to form and impress the selectors again. “At the moment, he probably only has a game or two left. It makes a huge thing leading into the World Cup to lose your captain,” Warne said in the lead-up to the second ODI in Nagpur.
On this tour to India, Finch had scores of 0, 8 and 0 before he scored a decent-looking 37 to give Australia a good start in their chase of 251.
