Sri Lanka beat New Zealand by 63 runs in the first Test that ended in Galle on Monday, September 23, to move up to No. 3 in the ICC World Test Championship points table. Chasing a challenging target of 275, Kiwis resumed Day 5 at 207-8 but were soon bowled out for 211.

The visitors were banking on Rachin Ravindra, batting on 91 overnight, to lift them to an improbable win. The left-handed batter was, however, dismissed after adding just one run to his score, trapped lbw by Prabath Jayasuriya. The Sri Lankan left-arm spinner then cleaned up William O’Rourke (0) to bowl the hosts to victory and complete his eighth five-fer, finishing with nine in the Test match.

Following the hard-fought triumph over New Zealand, Sri Lanka moved to third place in the World Test Championship points table. They have 48 points from eight matches (four wins, four losses), with a points percentage of 50.

As for the Kiwis, they are now in fourth place, with 36 points from seven matches (three wins, four losses) and a points percentage of 42.86.
