A cricket-related question was asked during a recent episode of the popular Indian quiz show 'KBC: Kaun Banega Crorepati'.
Episode 52 of the 15th season of the quiz show, a 'Parivaar' (family) special, featured the Chattopadhyay family on the 'hot-seat' in front of host Amitabh Bachchan. The ₹50 lakh question was about a player who had to retire from the sport because he injured his eye while on a hunting expedition.
The question read:
"Which of these cricketers lost an eye after an accident during a hunting expedition, leading to his retirement?"
The four options for the question were Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi, Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, Gulabrai Ramchand, and Kumar Shri Ranjitsinhji. Here is a screenshot of the question:
The correct answer was Option D: Kumar Shri Ranjitsinhji. However, the Chattopadhyay family was confused and decided to quit the game and take home ₹25 lakh.
After they had quit, the Chattopadhyay family guessed that Option D would have been the correct choice and were left bitterly disappointed.
Who is Kumar Shri Ranjitsinhji? All you need to know about the former England cricketer
Kumar Shri Ranjitsinhji played 15 Test matches for England from 1896 to 1902. Ranjitsinhji was born in Sarodar, India, which was a part of the British Empire at the time. Thus, he represented England at the international level. Being one of the first Indians to play the sport at the first-class level, he is known as the "Father of Indian Cricket."
India's premier first-class test tournament, the Ranji Trophy was named after Ranjitsinhji and inaugurated in the 1934-35 season. Several Indian legends have reached the national team through the Ranji Trophy pipeline.
Unfortunately, Kumar Ranjitsinhji's career was cut short because he lost one eye during a hunting expedition and he played his last first-class match in 1920. While representing England in international cricket, Ranjitsinhji scored 989 runs in 15 Test matches at an average of 44.95, including two centuries.
