Joe Root was run out via Angleo Mathews/Kusal Mendis in the 2023 World Cup match.

Sri Lanka all-rounder Angelo Mathews shone on his comeback as he dismissed England batter Joe Root in the World Cup game at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Thursday, October 26. The 36-year-old ran out Root with superb fielding moments after taking a wicket in his first over of the match. The right-handed batter departed for just three off 10 balls.

The run-out took place in the 10th over of England's innings. Root cut one delivery off Maheesh Theekshana straight to point and set off. However, Jonny Bairstow sent him back from the non-striker’s end.

In the meantime, Mathews collected the ball and immediately threw it to the wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis, who dislodged the bails in a flash. Root couldn’t get back to the crease despite a desperate dive. He walked off before the third umpire made the decision.

Sri Lanka dominating England in the 2023 World Cup match

Sri Lanka have been dominating England after being asked to bowl first in their 2023 World Cup match. Angelo Mathews provided the first breakthrough by dismissing Dawid Malan (28 off 25) before the run-out. Kasun Rajitha then sent back Jonny Bairstow (30 off 31), while Lahiru Kumara got rid of England captain Jos Buttler and Liam Livingstone cheaply.

At the time of writing, England were 89/5 after 20 overs, with Ben Stokes and Moeen Ali at the crease.

In the match, England made three changes as they dropped Harry Brook, Gus Atkinson and Sam Curran. The trio made way for Chris Woakes, Moeen Ali, and Liam Livingstone in the playing XI.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka made two changes as Angelo Mathews and Lahiru Kumara replaced Dushan Hemantha and Chamika Karunaratne, respectively.

For the unversed, England are yet to defeat Sri Lanka in World Cups since 1999. Since then, the Islanders have won in the 2007, 2011, 2015, and 2019 editions against England in the marquee ICC tournament.

England have so far lost three out of four games in the ongoing tournament, registering their only win against Bangladesh by 137 runs. Similarly, Sri Lanka have managed a solitary win versus the Netherlands by five wickets.
