MS Dhoni on the verge of breaking Sachin Tendulkar's record

MS Dhoni received a lot of praise for his performance in Australia.

What’s the story?

MS Dhoni has come extremely close to adding another milestone in his illustrious career. The former Indian skipper is on the brink of breaking the record for being India's leading run-getter in ODIs in New Zealand.

In case you didn’t know…

Currently, the record is held by none other than Sachin Tendulkar. The 'Master Blaster' has made 652 runs in 18 matches against the Kiwis at their home. Virender Sehwag, who has 598 runs in 12 matches against the Black Caps is 2nd on this list in their own backyard. Dhoni, who is in top-form currently, has 456 runs in 10 matches (9 innings) against New Zealand -- making him 3rd on the list. These also include 5 fifties.

If Dhoni adds 197 runs (or more) in the upcoming ODI series against New Zealand then he will surpass Tendulkar to clinch the record.

The heart of the matter

Dhoni's lackluster performances with the bat in 2018 had raised a lot of eyebrows. The veteran player recorded a total of just 275 runs in 20 innings and had the worst strike rate and average of his entire career.

However, the wicketkeeper-batsman rediscovered his form in the recently concluded ODI series against the Aussies. The 37-year-old hit three back to back fifties and claimed the 'Man of the Series' title as well.

Dhoni's sensible batting helped the Men in Blue clinch two wins (and the series). He shut up all the critics with his performances with the bat.

Dhoni hit a slow 51 off 96 deliveries in the first ODI against Australia. In the 2nd ODI, MSD scored an unbeaten 55 off 54 deliveries and it proved to be a match-winning knock. His unbeaten and well-timed 87 off 114 balls in the 3rd ODI was the icing on the cake. It helped the Men in Blue clinch a historic bilateral ODI series win down under.

What’s next?

The Ranchi-born player will hope to continue his good performance against New Zealand when they square off against each other. The first ODI will be played at the McLean Park in Napier on January 23, 2019.
