South Africa vs India 2018: Why Parthiv and Murali Vijay should open the batting

Indian captain Virat Kohli has been under immense scrutiny from various cricket analysts and experts, regarding his team selection for the playing XI. After handing a surprise debut to pacer Jasprit Bumrah in the first test, Kohli removed Bhuvneswar Kumar at the expense of Ishant Sharma in the second test.

This was particularly questionable as the seam bowler performed exceptionally in the first test and even faced more deliveries than any other Indian batsman on a seaming pitch. Above all this, Kohli has also chosen to keep out Ajinkya Rahane, who has a reputation of scoring runs overseas with astute temperamental technique.

Amidst all this controversy, I have developed my own opinions regarding who should open in the 3rd Test at the Wanderers.

Opener #1: Parthiv Patel

Speaking of controversy, I have decided to open with Parthiv Patel and shift KL Rahul down the order. The wicketkeeper-batsman, although averaging only 34 with the bat, is well known for scoring at a relatively brisk pace.

There is a huge problem with Vijay, Rahul, and Pujara in the top 3, as the triplet is very defensive. Although beneficial over a long period of time, these three are vulnerable to getting out to the new ball without scoring too many runs, thus building on the pressure.

A good example of this would be Day 4 of the 2nd Test, where India found themselves 35/3 after 23 overs. Parthiv Patel would provide a flurry of runs and put the opposition on the back foot.

Opener #2 Murali Vijay

Murali Vijay would ideally contrast Parthiv Patel with his defensive approach. The right-hander would perfectly complement the left-handed Parthiv Patel, and not allow the bowlers to settle on line and length.

The opener has been India's building foundation over the last few years, and his prolific record overseas means that he is more than capable to hold up one end and play the anchor.

The right-hander's good technique and excellent temperament ensure that he takes the edge over the more flamboyant - and unfortunately, inconsistent Shikhar Dhawan.
