Stats: Teams with most 400+ totals in ODIs

England are the latest team to cross the 400-run barrier in ODIs

England became the most recent team to overcome the 400-run barrier in One-Day International (ODI) cricket when they notched up a total of 408 for 9 from their 50 overs against New Zealand in the first ODI at Edgbaston, Birmingham, on Tuesday. England’s exploits (more specifically Jos Buttler and Joe Root) mean that Pakistan, West Indies, Bangladesh and Zimbabwe are now the only full-member nations to have not scored 400+ in ODI cricket.

While the novelty factor in teams scoring 400 or more in ODI cricket has dwindled as a result of teams having done it with alarming regularity in recent times, that doesn’t take anything away from the teams who do so. After all, there have only been 16 occasions in the history of ODI cricket when teams have crossed the special landmark.

India and South Africa top the list, having scored 400 or more five times each. Following them are Australia and Sri Lanka, who have scored 400+ on two occasions each; New Zealand and England, meanwhile have done so once each.

South Africa and Sri Lanka, in particular, deserve special mention as they are the only teams to have crossed a total of 400 while batting second. While the Proteas were successful in their attempt as their total of 438 for 9 against Australia was enough to give them victory, Sri Lanka fell short by a slender margin as they managed 411 for 8 in reply to India’s total of 414 for 7 at Rajkot in 2009.
