The first Test match was played between England and Australia in 1877. Since then, teams have looked to amass big totals to intimidate their opponents and win the game. A score of more than 600 runs is considered huge and the team stands a high chance of winning the match. Such a score also emboldens the captain to take risks and get the opposition out by attacking from the very start.
The first ever score of more than 600 runs was made by Australia against England at Melbourne. Today, we take a look at the top five teams who have most totals of 600 or more runs in Test matches.
#5 Pakistan - 15
Pakistan may not be known for their batting, but they have managed to cross a total of 600 or more runs 15 times in the Test cricket. Ranked fifth in this list, they have played more than 750 innings since their debut match in 1952.
The highest-ever Test score of Pakistan is 6/765 against Sri Lanka at Karachi in 2009. They scored a total of more than 600 runs for the first time in 1958 against the West Indies at Bridgetown. The match was drawn with final scores of (579/9 and 28/0) made by West Indies against the Pakistani total of 657/8.
#4 England - 20
The fourth team on this list is England with a tally of 20 such scores. They made their first-ever score of more than 600 runs in 1928 against Australia at Sydney. England (636 and 16/2) defeated Australia (253 and 397) by eight wickets in that match.
Out of more than 1800 innings, they have crossed 700 runs once, 800 runs once, and 900 runs once. Their highest score was 903/7 (declared) against Australia in 1938 at the Oval. They have won the second highest number of matches in Test cricket after Australia.
