Steven Smith's decision to not enforce the follow-on might still come back to haunt Australia as England end day four of a thrilling Test in Adelaide needing 178 to win with six wickets in hand. Captain Joe Root remains unbeaten on 67 with Chris Woakes at the crease and to make matters worse for Australia, they have no further reviews left as they used up both of theirs in quick succession after tea on day four of the Day-Night Ashes Test in Adelaide.

Earlier in the day, James Anderson registered his maiden five-wicket haul in an Ashes Test in Australia and a four-wicket haul from Chris Woakes helped the visitors bundle Australia out for 138 in their second innings, giving England a target of 354 for victory.

In response, England's openers put on a fifty partnership but Nathan Lyon got rid of Alastair Cook and then Mark Stoneman followed soon after, nicking one behind off Mitchell Starc. James Vince and Dawid Malan showed promise but both of them departed before the close of play. Chris Woakes walked in as a night watchman at No.6 and saw England through till the close of play without any further loss of wickets.
