Indian Cricketer Yuvraj Singh received the Padma Shri award from the Home Secretary of the Indian government.
On the 25th of January this year, he was named for the award alongside six other sports personalities. It included former Indian women cricketer Anjum Chopra, Kabaddi player Sunil Dabas, Mountaineer Love Raj Singh Dharmshaktu, Squash player Dipika Pallikal, Wheelchair Tennis player H. Boniface Prabhu and Mountaineer Mamta Sodha.
The names were shortlisted by a committee headed by the home secretary from recommendations sent by state governments and important personalities. The India’s highest civilian honours are given in three categories — Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri — and they are announced on the occasion of Republic Day every year and are conferred by the President of India.
The all rounder may not be a part of the Indian set up at the moment, but was instrumental in India winning the World T20 in 2007 (where he famously hit Stuart Broad for 6 sixes in an over) and was the man of the tournament of the 50 over World Cup in 2011.
He tweeted the a picture of him receiving the award via his official twitter account.
The awards were given by the President during the month of April, but Yuvraj couldn’t attend the ceremony since he was engaged with his IPL commitments. The award would cheer up Yuvraj whose dad was recently diagnosed with cancer.
The Cricketer also recently shot a segment for the show ‘comedy nights with Kapil’ alongside his India team mate Harbhajan Singh.
