Sony and Microsoft have been the giants of every gaming generation for a long while now. Sony first entered the market in 1994 with the PlayStation, followed by the PlayStation 2 in 2000, the PlayStation 3 in 2006 and the latest and greatest PlayStation 4 / PS4 in 2013.

Microsoft has been in the game longer with their Windows PC but stepped up as a fierce competitor with the introduction of their Xbox console in 2001.

They introduced the new and improved Xbox 360 in 2005 and the latest Xbox One in 2013, around the same time that the PS4 was introduced.

This decade has seen some of the greatest and most innovative games to be released across all platforms.

Big companies such as Rockstar, EA and Activision have released some award-winning titles. But other smaller companies such as Insomniac Games and other developers have also released games of a similar level.

There were many AAA titles which saw parallel releases on both consoles. Some of these include Red Dead Redemption 2, FIFA, Call of Duty and many others.

It is worth noting that the PS4 has seen much higher figures in hardware sales compared to the Xbox One. The PS4 sold nearly 91.5 million units in its lifetime whereas the Xbox One has only seen a little over 39 million.

2018 has also brought in another fierce competitor, the Nintendo Switch which also saw higher sales than the Xbox One. But let's leave that out of this article as that is a different ballgame altogether.

The 21st-century debate of "PS2 vs Xbox", "PS3 vs Xbox 360" and today "PS4 vs Xbox One" is one that has always sparked debate among gamers and the gaming community. So let us take a look at the highest grossing games between 2013 and 2018 and see how well they individually performed.

#4 FIFA 18

Released: 29 September 2017

Publisher: Electronic Arts

FIFA is a cult classic game franchise that sees successful sales and reception every year. FIFA 18 is the highest selling FIFA series so far (FIFA 19 hasn't performed nearly as well). The success of the series can also be attributed to the Football World Cup in 2018, held in Russia.

FIFA 18 sold nearly 24 million units worldwide, out of which nearly 60% of the sales (around 13 million units) went to the PS4.

The Xbox One got a meager 4 million sales and FIFA 17 and 16 outperformed FIFA 18 for the Xbox One. But FIFA 16 and 17 also got significantly higher numbers on the PS4 as well. So it looks many PlayStation owners worldwide do love to play football!

#3 Call of Duty: Black Ops 3

Released: 6 November 2015

Publisher: Activision

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 is the third entry into the Black Ops series and the twelfth Call of Duty game.

Although the game did not meet the expectations of many players, the series has made over 26.5 million units in sales. Black Ops 3 is one of the highest grossing games to sell on both the PS4 and the Xbox One.

The recent release, Black Ops 4 did not do as well as Black Ops 3, especially on launch day. The number of units sold on the Xbox One was about 7.5 million, and the PS4 received double those numbers at 15 million.

Just like FIFA, because of the number of people who own a PS4, the number of units sold for the game is also marginally higher.

On the PS4, the game sold over 11 million units whereas on the Xbox One just a little over 4.5 million. The significant difference in numbers between the two consoles is yet another sign that people love playing on the PS4 much more.

Released: 17 September 2013

Publisher: Rockstar Games

Considered one of the best games of all time, Grand Theft Auto 5 (GTA V) is also the third best selling video game of all time, right behind Tetris and Minecraft. The game was initially released for the PS3 and Xbox 360. Following the announcements and release of the PS4 and Xbox One, GTA V became the best selling game for both consoles.

The PS4 saw over 19 million units in sales, whereas the Xbox One saw over 9 million units. Its compelling story, the open world gameplay, multicharacter selection, detailed game design and so much more won the game many awards and a 10/10 rating. They are definitely not exaggerating when it comes to the greatness of this game.

The PS4 has seen higher sales numbers in every game released for both consoles so far. The PS4 also gets many more exclusives and that too good ones.

Games such as Spider-man, God of War and the Last of Us are one of many reasons why the PS4 has been performing and selling better than the Xbox One.
