Traffic from the Fallout player surge is giving Nexusmods server issues

If you've been getting constant Cloudflare checks and load time issues on Nexusmods recently, the Fallout TV series is to blame. Yesterday, the Nexusmods team put out a detailed update regarding what's going on behind the scenes. As many modders had expected, it is indeed from a surge of Fallout players.

Nexusmods is a free, community mod-hosting platform. A home to over 500,000 individual mods spanning over 2,800 games, it is currently the biggest modding site for numerous PC games by a mile.

Nexusmods recently addressed the load time issues with the website, saying:

"A large part of this has been due to the success and subsequent huge volume of traffic related to the Fallout series on Amazon Prime. The show was an instant hit and Fallout-mania has exploded on Nexus Mods, with a significant number of gamers looking to mod their Fallout experience.

They also added that the recent sales on all Fallout games on different platforms also has a part to play in this sudden growth:

"This has been amplified by game sales, with 75% off Fallout games on Steam, GOG and Fallout 4 also soon to be launching on Epic Games."

To wrap things up, they also showed an interesting pair of infographics regarding how massive the modding hype train is.

At its peak on last Sunday (April 21, 2024), the number of downloads was nearly 7.5 millions for Fallout 4 mods alone. Cumulatively, between all Falllout games available on PC, 6,300 TB worth of mods were downloaded over the course of the last weekend.

According to Nexusmods, with the bandwidth needed for this huge amount of data transfer, you can download "the entire Skyrim SE game twice every second for several days."

While the Skyrim modding scene has been the bread-and-butter of Nexusmods for over a decade now, Fallout modding is not far behind. Here are some stats to put things in perspective:

Fallout 4 and Fallout: New Vegas are the third and fourth highest in terms of available mods.
Fallout 4 has nearly 50,000 mods on Nexusmods, with over 1.4 billion unique downloads.
In comparison, Fallout: New Vegas modding is more niche, with about half the total unique downloads of Fallout 4.

The Fallout 4 modding scene in particular is arguably as active as Skyrim's. The game itself is about to launch its official next-gen upgrade for all platforms, with the long-awaited release of the DLC-sized mod Fallout: London in tow.

Season 1 of Amazon's Fallout series was a big hit, garnering universal critical acclaim - which led to a recent playerbase surge. Alongside newcomers getting into the iconic post-apocalyptic franchise, returning players are also joining in on the bandwagon to relive their nostalgic days with older Fallout titles.

As a much older title, Fallout: New Vegas has a relatively more niche modding community. Yet, the playerbase surge has led fans to revisit this cult classic, and mod it to the gills - contributing to a surprisingly significant modding traffic spike.
