The grid for the 2025 F1 Canadian GP is set, and we have George Russell on pole position with Max Verstappen right behind in P2. The qualifying was an interesting affair as it ultimately went the way of the British driver. For the race, however, things could get interesting.
Mercedes did not have the same long-run pace as some of its rivals, including Red Bull, McLaren, and Ferrari.
To add to this, what worked for George in qualifying was a slightly cooler condition that helped the car keep the tires in the window. Temperatures are expected to be higher during the race, and that could complicate the situation for the German team.
With that being said, the F1 Canadian GP has a penchant to be chaotic at times and yield interesting outcomes. What can we expect this time around? Let's take a look.
#5 The race could be processional
The softest compounds were expected to bring in a bigger strategic variable, which could potentially still be on the table during the race. However, it does appear that the tires tend to last for a long time around this track, and hence the variance in pace is not necessarily as one would expect.
The Canadian GP can get chaotic with crashes throwing in different variables, but by the looks of it, the race could be quite processional, as overtaking is not as straightforward as in Barcelona.
#4 Fernando Alonso secures a decent points haul
That Aston Martin in the hands of Fernando Alonso has certainly made that impressive step since Imola, and the Spaniard has been knocking on the door of a strong result since then. The F1 Canadian GP once again sees Alonso starting the race within the frontrunning group, and unless bad luck plays a role, it's going to be hard to see the driver not score a decent haul of points.
#3 Ferrari duo is potentially an outside contender for a podium
Lewis Hamilton has talked about a potential charge towards a podium, while Charles Leclerc was left lamenting a mistake on his qualifying lap. Ferrari appears to have a strong foundation around this track, and this was further accentuated by Leclerc's downbeat demeanor afterwards.
Lewis tends to go well around this track, while Charles is on a 2-race podium streak. The two drivers are the wildcards for making their way through the field.
#2 McLarens could come into their own in the race
There's a potential that the McLaren duo could just come into their own during the F1 Canadian GP. The sessions that we've had this weekend have been in somewhat cooler conditions, and that has been an Achilles heel for the car.
The race, however, is expected to be in somewhat warmer conditions. When that happens, the car tends to work better. This was also one of the reasons why the car was more competitive in qualifying as well. If the temperatures are higher during the F1 Canadian GP, the pendulum could once again switch towards McLaren.
#1 Max Verstappen wins the F1 Canadian GP
Well, if we're making a prediction this time around, we're picking Max Verstappen to win the F1 Canadian GP. The driver starts the race on the front row. He does appear to have a faster car compared to the Mercedes, and more importantly, in the long runs on Friday, the Red Bull was the fastest car. If we do end up with a straightforward race, Verstappen should be the favorite to pick up what would be his 3rd win of the season.
