British Grand Prix: Rosberg leads Mercedes 1-2 in Free Practice 3

Mercedes' German driver Nico Rosberg drives during the third practice session at the Silverstone circuit

After two practice sessions on Friday where the teams did majority of the running only in FP2 because of rain earlier in a day, Saturday Practice started off with the sun peeking out from the clouds on a dry track. Almost all the drivers came out within the first couple of minutes to make the most of the 60-minute session and get their set up right for Qualifying.

The drivers opted between the two available tyre options, the orange-marked hard tyres and the white-marked medium tyres. Most of the drivers were running on the medium tyres to check their qualifying pace.

This session saw a lot of drivers running wide after pushing their cars a little too much.

Sergio Perez suffered a major tyre failure, the cause of which is not sure yet. This brought out the red flag for about five minutes. Though he came back out later in the session, he could manage only 18th position.

The session belonged to the Mercedes duo, with Rosberg just edging out his teammate Hamilton by a tenth of a second.

Earlier in the session, Hamilton wasn’t happy with his car, but in the end he finally got the rhythm right and put in his best lap. In the final few minutes, Rosberg bettered his previous time and that gave Mercedes a lot of confidence going into Qualifying.

The two Red Bulls were right behind the Mercedes cars and they look stronger in their race pace.

Ferrari and Lotus didn’t seem to have enough pace to match those ahead and will need to fix the issues if they want to fight for a good grid position.

In less than two hours. the drivers will be back on track and it’s going to be a very exciting Qualifying session.
