His would-be competitors, at least, at some point in time on the grid would be Charles Leclerc and Antonio Giovinazzi, both of whom share an association with a name that is synonymous with speed.

His father changed the contours of Formula 1 racing, raising the bar of the contest ever too high for those who dared and followed.

Now, Mick Schumacher, son of Michael Schumacher, has taken his first giant stride towards Formula 1 by signing up with the prestigious Ferrari driver academy.

The young German, currently contesting in F2, the final feeder before the grand stage of F1 Grand Prix racing arrives, has taken a step that many would call symbolic in terms of the famous association of the name 'Schumacher' with a racing marquee that truly defined the historic annals of F1 racing.

Mick's famous father won 5 world titles of his 7 driving with a team that's arguably, the most famous name in the echelons of Formula 1.

But here's a point.

As Mick takes his first baby steps toward entering Formula 1, having signed up with a driver academy that's churned out names such as Charles Leclerc, Antonio Giovinazzi- the former all set to drive for the Italian stable in 2019- it's only natural that expectations of Mick take shape in the form of comparing him to his father, a man responsible for collecting 91 wins.

Here's something that those interested in Schumacher Jr. would keenly take note of.

A couple of months back, at the conclusion of the 2018 F1 season, Mick, who's yet to turn 20, attended the post-season F1 test at the Yas Marina, Abu Dhabi.

He also won the European Formula 3 title in his second attempt and is noted for being 'naturally fast' when he gets behind the wheel. This, therefore, only heightens the prospect of expecting what lays ahead for the talented German, with a passion for racing already running in those veins.

Here's what Mick noted about what might be called a really huge step in his journey to F1.

"I am thrilled that Ferrari has entered a partnership with me and my next future in motorsport will be in red, being part of the Ferrari Driver Academy and also of the Scuderia Ferrari family."
