Lewis Hamilton: Decision to join Mercedes from McLaren was right

Lewis Hamilton‘s move from McLaren to Mercedes at the start of the season came as a shock not only to the McLaren faithful but also to whole of the F1 fraternity. Adding insult to injury, the 2008 champion recently stated that Mercedes have a better car in place and his decision to leave McLaren has proved right in more than one ways. He believes that Mercedes offers him a car that is more competitive.

Hamilton, who won four races with McLaren last season, is yet to register a win for Mercedes. However, he insisted that the current car makes him feel closer to winning. “I feel like I have a better car this year, so I think we should be more competitive than we were last year. It is definitely closer to being able to win than what I have had for a couple of years, so I am looking forward to seeing what the car can do.”

“I think the car will go really well here. I feel good. I’ll be on the simulator, so I get to really focus on trying to nail the set-up. We’ve got into a good position so far and if we can get into an even better one, that would be fantastic,” he told the Daily Star ahead of the British Grand Prix at Silverstone this season.

The 28-year-old Brit has only managed three third-place finishes this season in spite of starting from pole once and from P2 thrice. He currently lies in the fourth place, 55 points behind the leader Sebastian Vettel. His team-mate Nico Rosberg earned the only win for Mercedes this season in Monaco.

But looking at McLaren’s season, Lewis’s decision to move on has indeed worked in his favour. The McLaren team is going through one of their worst season ever lying in sixth place, 14 points behind Force India. It looks like there is no hope left for them this season and the best that they can achieve is a fifth place finish in the constructors championship.

Hamilton had previously won 21 races, including the 2008 championship, in his six seasons with McLaren.
