Alain Prost talks about the quality that makes Max Verstappen so great

F1 legend Alain Prost feels that the quality that makes Max Verstappen so impressive is his ability to continue to improve so that he never stumbles. Verstappen has been dominant in F1 ever since he won his first title in 2021. The driver almost cruised to a title last season after he overcame a hiccup early in the season.

The 2023 F1 season has seen the Dutchman take things up a notch and completely dominate. The driver has consistently improved year after year as well. Max Verstappen in 2021 was full of energy and relentlessness but still a little raw. That changed in 2022 and 2023, when he decided to take a smarter approach to racing to secure wins and major results.

On the eve of Max Verstappen winning his third title, F1 legend and Former Mclaren and Ferrari driver Alain Prost praised the Red Bull driver on his achievement. He also pointed out the key area that makes Verstappen strong. Writing for L'Equipe, he opined:

“Winning a third title is already something great. To win one in a row is even greater. Because only a few great names have managed it. But I think that what makes Max Verstappen so great and so strong is his ability to be a great driver that he has been able to develop in order never to stumble and always to want more."

He added:

"There is no doubt that he has succeeded in becoming a great driver. But what, in my opinion, makes him even stronger is the way in which he has learned to be one with his car and his team."

Max Verstappen is not the same as he was in 2021

Delving deeper into the brilliance of the Red Bull driver, Alain Prost claimed that the driver we see now is not the same as he was in 2021. Prost wrote,

“He’s a great whole who strives for perfection every day. When you hear the driver complaining about the bad behaviour of his single-seater during free practice on Friday morning, it’s not the anger of the kid who used to make mistakes and sometimes ended up in the wall because of his impatience."

He added:

“No, this Max disappeared at the end of 2021 at the end of his magnificent battle against Lewis Hamilton. I’m not going to talk about the highly controversial Abu Dhabi final, but about the way he and his Red Bull battled throughout the season against Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes.”

The 26-year-old is already a 3-time world champion and will be hoping to build on his legacy in the years to come.
