Former F1 world champion Damon Hill gave a short reaction to a throwback picture of former world champion James Hunt on social media. Despite having contrasting personalities, Hill and Hunt shared a similar trajectory at the pinnacle of motorsport.
Both drivers began their careers in modest machinery and distinguished themselves on the grid through their performances and skills behind the wheel. While Hill jumped ship to Williams F1 early in his career in 1973, Hunt had to toil with the Hesketh F1 team for a couple of seasons before making his big move to McLaren in 1976.
James Hunt and his rival Niki Lauda produced one of the best seasons in F1 in 1976, and ended up winning their one and only title. After a couple more years in the Woking-based team, the flamboyant Brit called time on his career in 1979.
Damon Hill, on the other hand, won his sole title in 1996 with Williams but left the team straight after and retired from the sport at the end of the 1999 season. Both British drivers had successful stints after their racing careers, with Hunt becoming an F1 commentator with the BBC and Hill a pundit with Sky Sports.
F1, on Instagram, posted a series of throwback pictures with James Hunt, featuring his life on and off the track.
On his Instagram Story, Damon Hill reshared the post and gave a two-word reaction to James Hunt's style and said:
"Blue Velvet."

Over the last couple of years, Damon Hill has been active on social media and does not shy away from giving his opinion on F1 teams and drivers alike.
Damon Hill gives a damning verdict on Lando Norris-Oscar Piastri title fight
Former F1 world champion Damon Hill stated that McLaren driver Lando Norris had to "work out" his wheel-to-wheel combat skills as his teammate, Oscar Piastri, was inching ahead in the title race.
Speaking on the BBC‘s Chequered Flag podcast, the 1996 world champion said:
"Lando is now in a situation where he’s lost more points to his title rival, in effect, which is his teammate, Oscar. Oscar is inching ahead, and it’s a long way to go yet, and it’s not over and done, but you get the sense that in a battle, in a wheel-to-wheel battle, Oscar will come out ahead in a wheel-to-wheel race over Lando.
“So either he works out what to do about that, or he may suffer more defeats or losses like that.”
In the nine races and two Sprints thus far in 2025, Piastri holds a 10-point advantage over Norris in the title fight, with Max Verstappen further 39 points behind the latter.
