In addition to signing Mercedes-AMG's star driver Lewis Hamilton for the 2025 Formula 1 season, Ferrari was also looking to bring in the German team's reserve driver Mick Schumacher. However, unlike the iconic Brit, the young German was offered a driver's role for the 2025 World Endurance Championship.
Being a part of the Ferrari Driver Academy since 2019, Schumacher began his F1 career with Haas in 2021. Despite decent performances in both the 2021 and 2022 seasons, the 25-year-old was replaced by Nico Hulkenberg in 2023. Since then, Schumacher has been with Mercedes-AMG as a reserve driver.
Apart from F1, he also competed in the 2024 World Endurance Championship season with Alpine's Hypercar team. This resulted in Ferrari offering him a seat in the 2025 WEC season, as reported by Austrian newspaper Kleine Zeitung.
Despite a good offer to join the Prancing Horse, the deal didn't go through for the young racer. The news was also shared on X by SoyMotor.com.
Here's a look at the post, captioned:
"Mick Schumacher received an offer to return to Ferrari in 2025, although this time as a driver for the World Endurance Championship. Ferrari wanted some more sponsors and they saw Mick as a good option for that, but the deal fell through."
As of now, Schumacher is expected to continue his role as a reserve driver for Mercedes-AMG, despite Hamilton's departure in 2025.
"He loves the engineering and the technical side of Formula 1" - Former Ferrari employee claimed Carlos Sainz's ideal job was 'F1 race engineer'
With seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton joining Ferrari in 2025, Carlos Sainz is set to depart for Williams. Ahead of the transition, former Ferrari race engineer Tom Stallard praised the Spaniard for his engineering and technical knowledge during a recent Beyond The Grid podcast.
Being a second-generation racer, Sainz has been interested in the technical side of Formula 1. Stallard, currently a race engineer to McLaren's Oscar Piastri, praised the four-time race winner on the podcast (via Formula 1).
“Carlos is a brilliant driver to work with. Carlos once said to me, when we asked him what his ideal job in Formula 1 was, he said race engineer before he considered whether driver was an option! He loves the engineering and the technical side of Formula 1. It makes sense because his dad, Carlos Senior, is the same in rally," Stallard explained.
“So I think they are getting someone who will really want to engage with their technical department, who will want to join engineering meetings and help them (to) be pushing in the right direction. He absolutely loves all that. Carlos is, probably of all the drivers I’ve worked with, the one I’ve stayed closest friends with when I’ve stopped working directly with them,” he added.
With three races to go, Sainz is placed fifth in the 2024 drivers' standings, while Ferrari has moved to second position in the constructors' championship ahead of Red Bull Racing
