Oscar Piastri has matched Lewis Hamilton and Ayrton Senna's legendary feat with McLaren. After his last victory in the 2025 Spanish Grand Prix, Piastri is now only the third driver to clinch eight consecutive podiums for McLaren after Senna and Hamilton.

Piastri, who made his debut in 2023, has emerged as the frontrunner to win the 2025 championship in his third Formula 1 season. This year, he has won five out of the first nine races to leads the title race with 186 points.

He has beaten his teammate Lando Norris in equal machinery to establish himself as one of the strongest talents on the grid.

At the recently concluded Spanish Grand Prix, Piastri crossed the checkered flag first to claim his fifth victory of the 2025 season. Not only that, the win in Barcelona was his eighth consecutive podium finish for McLaren.

Oscar Piastri is only the third driver to achieve this milestone for McLaren. Previously, legend Ayrton Senna had scaled his feat for the Woking-based squad in 1988. His milestone was emulated by seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton in 2007, also his debut year, as F1 shared in a post on Instagram.

For Piastri, the 2025 season is a breakout year. In 2024, he followed team orders to help Lando Norris compete with Max Verstappen in the title race. However, this year, he has been competitive since the get-go. From winning in China, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Miami, and Spain to claiming P3 in Japan, Imola, and Monaco, Piastri has been a consistent force for McLaren.

With both Piastri and Norris pushing the limits, McLaren has taken a massive lead in the constructors' championship with 362 points. Ferrari, meanwhile, has climbed to P2 with 165 points.

McLaren has emerged as the fastest team on the grid this season. Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris have so far been allowed to race and compete for the title freely. Their direct rival, Max Verstappen, albeit in a slightly weaker Red Bull car, is still a threat with 137 points, just 49 behind Piastri.

Verstappen, who is chasing his fifth consecutive title in 2025, could be a threat to McLaren in the second half of the season if Red Bull manages to close the gap. Hence, in such a possible scenario, Piastri believes the papaya team might enforce team orders to prioritize a single entity.

Talking to Viaplay, Piastri said (via Racingnews365):

"[We] both want to be world champion. When you've got two quick drivers that can fight for that on merit, then you should let it happen. I think if one of us jumps ahead of the other and, say, Max - or if someone else, but probably Max - is still in the fight, then yes, maybe at some point there needs to be a conversation. But I think we're very far away from that point at the moment."

Max Verstappen's gap to Oscar Piastri widened after he finished P10 at the Spanish GP. He crossed the checkered flag at P5, but due to a 10-second penalty imposed for collision with George Russell, the Dutchman dropped five places and went home with a single point.
