Sergio Perez has opened up on his wish to retire in F1 with Red Bull and said that such a thought comes up because of how much the team has done for him in his F1 career. The Mexican was famously out of a drive at the end of the 2020 season.
Perez was being replaced by Sebastian Vettel at the team Racing Point (which was going to be rebranded as Aston Martin) for 2021. It was at that moment that Red Bull gave him the opportunity to join the team and replace Alex Albon. Since then, Perez has been part of the team.
He joined Red Bull in 2021 and played a crucial role in Max Verstappen's maiden title bid. Since 2022, Perez has been the supporting cast within the team. This season and the season prior have seen many questions arise about the role that Perez plays on the team and the contribution he makes overall. His seat was in danger prior to the summer break as well, and many thought that he would lose his seat.
Two races after the summer break, Sergio Perez is still a part of the team, and in an interview with The Times, the Mexican opened up on how Red Bull has given him so much in F1 and he wants to retire from the sport with this team. Admitting that he's been fighting throughout his career to still be in F1, he said:
"I’ve been fighting all my life to be here. I know that I’m towards the end of my career, because I don’t want to do it for too long. There will be a time, I don’t know when, where I will just have to say, look, ‘I cannot live anymore with leaving my family all the time behind.’"
Sergio Perez added:
"I want to end my career here. I don’t know when, but it’s a team that has given me everything, and I want to give everything back to them as well. Before that, hopefully we are able to win a few more championships."
Sergio Perez backs Red Bull to get out of the current situation
Sergio Perez has backed Red Bull to come out of the current situation that the team finds itself in. The car has continued to struggle and seems to have gotten worse after every race. The team started the year with a dominant car but as the season has progressed, the car has been overhauled in performance.
So much so that McLaren, Mercedes, and Ferrari were quicker than Red Bull in Monza. Sergio Perez has, however, backed the team to bounce back in the coming races, as he said:
"We have produced great cars in the past and there is no reason why we cannot get back on track. We have no questions now, we know the problem. Given it is all related to balance, if we can find a fix then we can switch it around but for now, it’s head down until we find the answer."
Red Bull is only 8 points ahead in the constructors' championship. The gap is just too small now and the team needs immediate action to prevent losing out on the title.
