#3 Roberto Carlos
Think left-back and there is no way one can leave out Roberto Carlos’ name in any all-time list of best players in that position. Not only was the Brazilian an explosive presence, his shooting ability was out of the world.
In 2002, Carlos would enjoy his most successful spell as a player. First, he helped Real Madrid lift the Champions League, beating Bayer Leverkusen in the final. He then teamed up with his Brazil teammates later in the same year as they recorded a 2-0 win over Germany to win the World Cup.
#2 Sami Khedira
While there have been many German players who have won the Champions League and World Cup in the same year in the past, Sami Khedira also joined this exclusive list in 2014.
The midfielder started that year battling injury but ended it as an European and world champion. After helping Real Madrid to the Champions League in May, Khedira was back at it again in July, helping Germany to a narrow 1-0 win over Argentina in the World Cup final.
#1 Raphael Varane
The most recent player to have won the UEFA Champions League and the FIFA World Cup in the same year is Raphael Varane. At just 26, the Frenchman has seen a lot and won a lot in football.
In 2018, Varane played a key role as Real Madrid beat Liverpool to lift a record 13th Champions League title. Then two months later, he was at the heart of defence as France routed Croatia 4-2 to win the FIFA World Cup.
