Sarri joins a long line of successful Italian coaches at Chelsea

Italian coaches have a history of doing well at Chelsea. Two of the last three Italian coaches to have managed Chelsea have won the Premier League in their debut season; Carlo Ancelotti in 2010, and Antonio Conte in 2017, while Roberto Di Matteo guided them to their maiden Champions League crown in 2012.

Both league titles were won in unexpected fashion, with Ancelotti masterminding a beautiful attacking brand of football (his team scored the then-league-record number of goals in a season which was broken by Man City last year) to halt Manchester United's run of three consecutive Premier League titles.

Conte also delivered the title in emphatic style, stringing together a joint-record number of consecutive victories, and most victories in a single season (both broken by City) en route their Premier League win.

He also had a major impact on English football, winning the league with a distinct back-three system, which was so effective that as many as 15 other Premier League clubs, as well as the England national team, have gone on to adopt some form of the same tactics.

Maurizio Sarri is an Italian coach, with an extremely high tactical acumen (which all Italian coaches seem to possess), and he comes with an aesthetic style of football which will be a treat to watch in the Premier League.

His Napoli side were one of the more entertaining sides to watch last season and, even though at 59 years, he is yet to win a major trophy in his managerial career. If history favours him like it did his compatriots, he could well be hoisted in the air alongside the most valuable domestic title in European football come May next year.
