3 reasons why Paul Pogba is the best midfielder in the world currently

One of the highlights of this season’s Premier League has been Manchester United’s resurgence since appointing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as caretaker manager. The Red Devils have tasted defeat just once in 13 games under the Norwegian.

But key to that impressive run has been Paul Pogba’s amazing form. The Frenchman endured a torrid start to the season after falling out with erstwhile manager Jose Mourinho. At a point, the 25-year-old was even relegated to the bench due to his inability to play the way the Portuguese manager wanted.

However, under Solskjaer, Pogba has been handed a fresh start and he is repaying the manager’s faith with impressive performances. The former Juventus star is once again enjoying his football and is proving the quality which made Manchester United fork out £89 million to bring him to Old Trafford.

Currently, Pogba looks unplayable and there are very few footballers in Europe who can be compared to him in his present form.

Here are three reasons why Pogba is currently the best midfielder in the world:

#3 Pogba’s current consistency is unmatched

It is only fair to say that Paul Pogba is currently the most consistent midfielder in the world. Over the last two months, he has demonstrated how important he is to Manchester United’s cause.

There are a lot of top midfielders in Europe, but none can claim to churn out imperious week-in week-out performances like the Frenchman is currently doing. Pogba has been reborn since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took charge and his improved performances are the reason why Manchester United have risen from the 6th position into the Premier League top four.

For the last two years that Pogba has been at Manchester United, it is his ability to perform consistently that has often been questioned. However, he is currently serving his critics humble pie.

Anytime the Frenchman is on such a run, there is no stopping him and, right now, there is no midfielder that can match his confidence, class and consistency on the pitch.

#2 He’s involved in more goals than any other midfielder in Europe

Sometimes it is unfair to judge midfield players using statistics of goals and assists. This is because the likes of Zinedine Zidane, Xavi Hernandez and Andres Iniesta were all great on the field but their numbers spoke the opposite.

It is, therefore, to the credit of Paul Pogba that he is a complete package. The former Juventus star does not just dominate games; he is also blessed with all-around ability on the field. Currently, no central midfielder in Europe’s top five leagues has been involved in more goals than the Frenchman.

Pogba has scored 14 goals in 32 games in all competitions this season, with 11 of those goals coming in the Premier League alone. The Manchester United no.6 also has 10 assists to his name.

In all, Pogba has had a hand in 24 goals in just 32 games this season. These are astronomical numbers that only a word class player can conjure, and they put Pogba ahead of any other midfielder in the world.

#1 He’s the most complete midfielder in the world

Football in the last decade has transformed and so has the positional play of many footballers. These days, it is very rare to find a player who can play across all the positions in midfield and still churn out world-class performances.

But if there is one footballer who ticks all those brackets, it is definitely Paul Pogba. During the 2018 World Cup, he demonstrated that he could be used in a more defensive role and still excel at it.

And, on Monday against Chelsea in the FA Cup, the 25-year-old once again proved why he is the most complete midfield player in the world with his performance. Having created the first goal – displacing Cesar Azpilicueta before crossing the ball for Ander Herrera to head home – Pogba ran across to put Man United 2-0 up with a towering header of his own.

The pass to Marcus Rashford, the run across from midfield into the Chelsea box, and the ability to beat both David Luiz and Antonio Rudiger in the air to head the ball into the net was the perfect demonstration of Pogba’s completeness. He currently has no co-equal in his position.
