5 clubs targeting Borussia Dortmund's Marco Reus

Still such a threat – despite his shortcomings

What is it about Marco Reus that has the world drooling every time he touches the ball? Is it his hair? From first glance, it does seem like the kind of hair-do that uses a lot of styling creams. But yeah, it does work. And the fact that he’s stayed loyal to that style for a while probably explains a lot about him in ways we wouldn’t have thought.

Seriously though, Reus is a fantastic footballer – when he’s fit, at least. The 27-year-old is the kind of winger any team in the world would love to have. He’s not just great with and without the ball, but his mental strength to keep going on and on is a testament to why he’s still regarded as one of Germany’s and Borussia Dortmund’s best players.

With only two years left on his current contract with the Ruhr club this summer, Reus is potentially sizing up his options. There are a bunch of clubs all over Europe reportedly considering him and should he stay fit, he could get a move to either one of these five clubs:

Chelsea

How much deadlier could this Chelsea team get?

Just Google ‘Marco Reus Chelsea’ and a bunch of articles will pop up suggesting Antonio Conte has been on a scouting spree – if you can say that – intensively studying every aspect of Reus’ 15 games so far this season and how it could help further Chelsea’s claim to the crown both in England and in Europe.

It’s possible a lot of that happened. Reus is a tactically astute footballer with a brain wired for attacking and breaking down defences. Given Conte’s system at Chelsea, he needs someone who can take care of the attacking part all by himself.

And with Eden Hazard seemingly angling towards a move to Real Madrid, it would be in Chelsea’s best interests if they pursued someone in the ilk of Reus.

As part of a front three including Willian/Pedro and Diego Costa, Reus wouldn’t need much time settling into the Premier League given the amount of experience he has facing English oppositions in the UEFA Champions League.

Paris Saint-Germain

Still recruiting: Paris Saint-Germain

Easily the only club in the world that gets excited at the very thought of playing in the UEFA Champions League. Paris Saint-Germain sacked uber-popular manager Laurent Blanc because he didn’t do much to win Europe’s most coveted title and replaced him with Unai Emery who failed to do so, too, albeit in the grandest, most spectacular way possible – blowing a 4-0 lead.

The Parisian giants are en route to routinely winning another Ligue 1 title – thanks to the spending of tens of millions, signing the likes of Julian Draxler, Goncalo Guedes in January earlier this year. But they are still reportedly in the market for someone who could play on the left-wing.

Reus fits everything they’re looking for. He’s even been to the finals of the UEFA Champions League.

Manchester United

He likes them mature. Seriously.

This is a link we’ve seen a lot in the past few months. Marco Reus has admirers in the Manchester United camp and should he choose to move to England in the summer, Jose Mourinho’s team might be one of the better destinations.

And he’s even the kind of player Mourinho loves: mature and with experience. Reus has the right environment to succeed in the Premier League. With Ander Herrera, Juan Mata, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Paul Pogba to help him out, it just might be the kind of experience that would help the German in his pursuit to get to the top.

The club have the spots and the kind of financial muscle to ensure a move like this can piece itself together. Should the club qualify for the UEFA Champions League, Reus needn’t have to think twice.

Bayern Munich

Perpetual poachers: Bayern Munich

Yes, Reus has said in the past that he’ll not follow the path of Mario Gotze – who’s since back – Mats Hummels and Robert Lewandowski to Bayern Munich but should Borussia Dortmund continue to stay below the Bavarians in all competitions, he might have to choose between a successful career and barren loyalty.

Bayern are in the midst of a mini-realisation. Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben are to soon be in the final years of their contracts and are at an age where they can’t contribute as well to the club as they have. And Reus could fix a lot of those problems for Bayern with the knowledge and the experience he has of the Bundesliga.

While it may go against a lot of what he has stood for in the past, it could make him more of a success than he is currently. And that’s something that turns heads.

Arsenal

No big ask replacing this guy, really

Arsenal are going to lose Alexis Sanchez in the summer, there I said it. Rip the bandaid off and all that. And if the Gunners – and Arsene Wenger – want someone who can come in and essentially replace the Chilean toe for toe, it’s Marco Reus.

Reus is a huge fan of the Gunners and he’s tried so hard to keep a lid on it. And this summer, he might finally have the chance to move to a club that he loves and play under a manager he adores and finally walk in the shoes of his idol, Tomas Rosicky.

The North London club have the kind of money to afford Reus and should they decide to cash in on Sanchez, it’ll only make the deal a whole lot easier. With Mesut Ozil – should he stay – Per Mertesacker and Shkodran Mustafi already at the club, Reus will have a familiar and safe environment in which to take his game up a notch.
