Liverpool were a good attacking side under Klopp, but Klopp and the team management soon realized that they cannot be serious title contenders unless they have leadership at the back. Out came the chequebook and Virgil van Djik became the most expensive defender in football history.
Manchester City had again shown interest in the top talent but they thought the asking price was a bit too much to justify. But 12 months later, it is the Merseyside club which is reaping the benefit of paying big for a defender. With just 10 goals conceded in 21 League games this season, van Djik seems to be the difference between Liverpool and Manchester City.
van Dijk has not only shown great performances in big games but he has transformed the mentality of the Liverpool back four who now are adept at facing the big attacking teams that too with ease. If Liverpool win the league this season, Klopp has to be credited for the vision he showed in getting the deal done
