#3 Wesley Sneijder

Wesley Sneijder, widely regarded as one of the best midfielders in recent times, couldn't get going at Real Madrid.

The Ajax youth product made more than 180 appearances for the Dutch giants before completing a much-touted €27 million move to Real Madrid in 2007. However, the Netherlands international only last two seasons at Real Madrid before moving to Inter Milan in 2009.

Sneijder soon found his bearings at the Italian giants and played a key role under Jose Mourinho as Inter won the continental treble, with many calling the midfielder one of the best in world football at that point.

#2 Arjen Robben

Arjen Robben, one of the best wingers to have played the game, is another Dutch player who could not make an impact with the Los Blancos.

Robben made his name as a pacy, technical winger at PSV Eindhoven, which earned him a move to Chelsea in 2004. After some good performances in the Premier League, Real Madrid spent €35 million to sign the Netherlands international.

However, Robben, like Sneijder, lasted only two seasons at the club before moving to Bayern Munich for €25 million.

At Bavaria, Robben impressed the Bayern faithful with his ability to cut inside onto his stronger left foot and scoring goals aplenty as he struck a prolific partnership with Franck Ribery on the left flank.

#1 Samuel Eto'o

Samuel Eto'o was one of the best strikers of his generation and arguably the greatest African player of all time.

However, things did not work out for him at Real Madrid, though. After joining the club in 1996 as a 16-year old, Eto'o made only seven appearances for Real Madrid but could not score any goals.

The player was then shipped out to Mallorca where he impressed with his performances, in the process earning a move to Barcelona.

The Cameroon international was an incredibly consistent goal-scorer, be it for Barcelona or Inter Milan. He is the first player to win two European continental trebles, following his success with Barcelona with that at the Italian club.

Eto'o later played for the likes of Anzhi Makhachkala, Chelsea, Everton and Sampdoria among various other clubs before retiring in 2019 after a stint with Qatar SC.
