5 times Pep Guardiola got mad and went off the hook

Wigan Athletic v Manchester City - The Emirates FA Cup Fifth Round
A livid Guardiola

What makes Pep Guardiola so likeable? Apart from the fact that he churned out a dream Barcelona team that won six trophies in a year, Pep Guardiola is particularly praised for Shaolin Monk tendency of being calm in most cases.

But is he? Is the Catalan really as calm as people think he is? Is he the oozing epitome of the calmness exuded by a Yogi meditating on the peak of Everest? At times, you might be forgiven for thinking that he is, because the truth is that he isn’t.

And here are 5 instances that prove it…

#5 Oppressed tempest

While the subheading might sound weird, Pep Guardiola’s post-match interview after Manchester City’s 2-1 win against Burnley at the Etihad last season is weirder—which is why it perfectly fits with how the former Bayern manager spoke.

It was as though he was oppressing the anger—the tempest—within him so that it doesn’t erupt like a volcano and consume everything that it touches. The reason for the visionary tactician’s rage was that Fernandinho was red-carded in that game, a decision that really didn’t go down well with him.

As you can see, he was… he was… just weird. Answering every question sparsely, the anger within him was just increasing as the interview progressed. His nose was as red as a stoner’s eyes, which was a dead giveaway of the inferno boiling within him.

#4 Smiling fury

When a manager is swearing in a press conference by using the F-word in Spanish, you have to put that on the list of the moments he lost his cool. This is what Pep Guardiola did before Barcelona’s Champions League semi-final clash against Real Madrid in 2011.

After a whole season of the Portuguese lamenting on referee supporting Barcelona in matches, Pep Guardiola had enough and took on the off-field war against him in the above press conference.

The Catalan labelled Mourinho as the “***king boss” when it came to winning war of words and stated that he will do his part on the pitch. And he said most of it with a smile on his face.

In the end, Guardiola did keep his word as Barcelona overcame Real Madrid in the semis.

#3 Ready for a punch

Just look at Pep’s expression when he yells at the fourth official. This happened in April 2015 when Bayern Munich were level at 1-1 in the 116th minute against Borussia Dortmund in the semi-final of the German Cup.

After Robert Lewandowski fell in the penalty area, the whole of Bayern team were jumping for a penalty. When the referee refused to give it, he incurred the wrath of the former Barcelona manager. As can be seen in the video, he brought all the components of his face at one place and was ready to bring the devil out of the earth’s core.

In the end, however, he did hug the fourth official and they all then had a good laugh about it.

#2 ‘Praising’ Redmond

One can never really know what happened here. According to Redmond, Guardiola was actually complimenting him for his display.

Redmond wrote on his Twitter:

"I felt I had to say something and clear a few things that are floating around right now.

"Yes, he was very passionate, intense and aggressive but he was only very complimentary and positive to me.

"He commented on my qualities as a young English player and how he wanted me to attack his team more during the game in a similar way to last season.

Erm… what? It is very difficult to picture this around what the video is displaying. Guardiola seemed completely animated after Raheem Sterling’s 96th-minute winner against Southampton earlier this season.

Even if he was praising him, there was perhaps a better way to do it that throwing your arms all around the park and causing a storm from it.

#1 FA Cup ousting against Wigan

Just before last night, Pep Guardiola’s men were being backed to win a quadruple this season. After all, his team looked seemingly unbeatable and third-tier Wigan are just too far behind the Citizens, which is not entirely embarrassing since even most Premier League clubs are.

Not even in their wildest dreams did people even hope for Wigan to beat Pep Guardiola’s men. On Monday, however, they beat the giants and ousted them from the FA Cup—crushing their quadruple dreams.

At the cusp of half-time, Pep Guardiola was furious at the referee for showing Fabian Delph a red card for his lunging tackle on Wigan midfielder Max Power. What irked the Catalan the most is that the referee initially brought out his yellow card, but then showed the red instead.

Guardiola was fuming and he showed his wrath in the tunnel during half-time as he had a go at Wigan manager Paul Cook and was seen shouting at his players to rush to the dressing room.
