What's the story?

Arsenal are in doldrums at the moment. After having suffered a morale sapping loss to Liverpool last weekend, they have already lost Oxlade-Chamberlain to the same team. With Alexis Sanchez also reportedly close to sealing a move for Manchester City, the Gunners are in desperate need for some fresh faces and reinforcements.

It might not be all doom and gloom though for Arsenal fans as various reports in The Metro claim that the Gunners have opened contact with PSG star Julian Draxler. The German has long been linked with a move to the Premier League and Wenger is reportedly determined to tie up a deal for the talented winger should Sanchez make his long-anticipated move to City.

Julian Draxler
The perfect Alexis Sanchez replacement?

One of the most talented wingers in world football at the moment, Draxler impressively captained a second string German side to a Confederations Cup triumph in the summer. Having joined PSG in just January, the German winger could be on his way out as PSG reportedly need to sell some players in order to not fall foul of UEFA's FFP regulations.

Still only 23, Draxler would certainly be like a breath of fresh air for the sagging Arsenal side and his technical ability, dribbling skills, and speed could go a long way in replacing the potential giant sized Alexis Sanchez hole.

The heart of the matter

With the signing of Neymar and the potential arrival of Mbappe, opportunities for Draxler might be limited. It was reported that the Ligue 1 giants were looking to offload either Draxler or Di Maria and with Arsenal now mostly resigned to losing Sanchez, the youngster looks like an excellent signing for Wenger.

The two clubs have already initiated contact and a fee of around £45 million should be enough to land the highly coveted German international.

Author's take

With Alexis Sanchez adamant on joining Manchester City, it might be best for the Gunners to cash in on the out of contract Chilean and invest a sizeable portion of that transfer fee on Draxler.

Quick, technically gifted and still 23, Draxler will certainly prove to be an excellent addition to the Arsenal side.
