Arsenal Transfer News: Denilson Set For Sao Paolo Loan Deal

Arsenal midfielder Denilson is set to join Brazilian side Sao Paolo for a season long loan deal, according to reports. The Brazilian star has been out of favour at the Gunners for some time, and will be eyeing a permanent switch at the end of the loan spell in Brazil.

Denilson has travelled with Arsenal to their tour to Malaysia and China, but made it clear in a previous meeting in May that he wanted to leave the club. He had then said-

“I’ve simply been to see (manager) Arsene Wenger and told him how I felt – and he has agreed to let me go,”

“This has been the worst season of my life and I am so upset, so frustrated. I am a winner and I came here to win trophies but I’ve been here for five years and won nothing.

“A footballer’s career is over very quickly so it is time to move on. I know some people think I’m crazy. I need a fresh challenge and although I know I’m taking a big gamble I am ready to take that risk.

“I can’t see myself returning in a Chelsea shirt, or Liverpool or Manchester City – and definitely not Tottenham. I think my future will be in Spain or Italy.”

ESPN Brazil are reporting that Brazilian side Sao Paolo, the team which Denilson formerly played for, have come in and agreed a season long loan deal with Arsenal for the player. Fluminese were believed to be in talks with Arsenal for about 20 days before Sao Paolo came in and Denilson preferred them instead.

This is surely a positive move for all parties involved. Denilson was a pivotal part of the Gunners line up in previous seasons but found himself relegated to the bench after substandard performances and the emergence of Jack Wilshere in a midfield role. A bevy of niggling injuries didn’t help matters either.

Arsenal will hope Denilson can recapture some of his earlier mojo which led to the London club signing him back in 2006 for a sum of 3.5 million pounds. It remains to be seen whether Denilson comes back from his loan spell a reinvigorated man, or chooses to invoke the permanent deal clause and play in Brazil instead.
